He means he'll get a star from Bob-Omb Battlefield, the only level open in the beginning of the game, and use it to open Whomp's Fortress. Then he will get the caged island star as his second star.

My plan is to only get secret stars and stars that are hard to get from early - Bob-Omb Battlefield's 100-coin star, the cage star, the jet stream star, etc. Suggestions?

Have we already found a way to get on top of the arch of bricks over the start of the Princess's Secret Slide?
I've found a way and if there already is a way, I think my way is different.
When you start, face the sign. Now do a triple jump so that you hit the wall (on the arch directly behind the sign) at the peak of your jump. Now, wall kick and hold back as hard as you can. If you did it right and maybe with a little luck, you'll grab the edge and be able to pull yourself up.

Yeah, that's been discovered. It's in one of Dom Dunc's stunt/trick videos.

Are we talking about the same thing? Because I have never heard of this being done before.
And if we are talking about the same thing, where can I see the video?

Dom Dunc, I just read your site, and found out that getting the 'Chests in the Current' star in Dire Docks was considered a glitch... I always collect it before getting the Bowsers Sub star, and had no idea it was considered special to be able to do it. All you have to do is line yourself up right for the last chest, then mash the A button after the star appears.

Wow, that's nice, I haven't seen a lot of that stuff before. I noticed, though, that there were a few shots of things that were only a few frames long, not long enough to see details but long enough to know they're there, so I'm wondering if you could tell me what they are...

Okay, so we are talking about the same thing, BUT I still found a different way. In the video, Mario wall kicks off the side walls. I wall kick off the arch itself. (and then hold the control stick back as hard as I can) So I have found a harder, but possibly quicker way to get to the top.

My chosen way is to do a normal jump and wallkick of the right wall, then off the right part of the arch, then the right wall, and grab the top. Easy.

Um, hey, something really weird happened to me. I was playing around with some cheats on an emulator:
A0325403 FF00 (Huge Sign)
D033AFA1 0020 + 8133B1BC 4220 + D033B1BD 0020 +
8133B17C 0300 + D033B1BD 0020 + 8133B17E 0880 (Moon Jump)
A1256BA6 0000 (Long Jump)
A1254A30 0000 + 8133B176 FFFF (Smoking Mario)
8133B19E FFFF (Mario Forward)
8133B1BC 0010 (Mega Jump)
A032C1CD AAAA (???)
Anyway, first I was using Mario Forward and Mega Jump, and when I died (I was in Course 8) I appeared BEHIND the wall, and so immediately after I had regained my health the level started. OK, that's weird, I thought. But then, I was doing some other weird things, and suddenly I was in a room with a dark brown floor and light brown, sloped walls, and I couldn't move my camera. Moving around a bit, I discovered that I was inside a demented Course 8 - the enemies were still there, but the floor was textured black, some stuff was missing, and there were odd shadows running through the level at weird points. Not to mention I had difficulty moving, and the camera was uber screwed up. I saved, turned off the cheats, reset, and loaded, and the same thing kept happening. As before, whenever I died I was put behind the wall.
Can anyone provide any idea of why this would happen?

I'm sorry to triple post, but this is something completely different.
I'm using a "Level Select" thingy, and it looks like each of the levels have weird names. For example, HMC is "Horror Dungeon". Is this already common knowledge?

Your entering a screwed up version of Course 8 was probably just caused by the cheats you were using although I don't know why it would keep happening after you reset, I wonder if it could happen in an unmodified game.
As for the different names for courses, it's not uncommon for levels to be called something in the programming of a game and something different in the final game due to the name not being decided on until a late stage in development. It could be that, or simply a different translation of the original Japanese, since it probably wasn't called Hazy Maze Cave in the original. I'm sure it would be interesting to see this list of names no matter the reson.

In Bob-Omb Battlefield, pick up the small cork box and put it on top of one of the big cork boxes nearby. Then begin walking away. The small box will fall down inside the big one.
You can then break the big box to reveal the small one inside it. Make sure you put it right on the top center. If the box touches the sides of the big box, it breaks up.
the gate behind the chain chomp appears to be quite impregnable, since I used the box to push through the other gate down in the pit and it worked on the first try.
I tried long jumping from the right parapet on top of the fortress tower to the caged island, but was only able to bump the side of it.

What wall did you go behind? The back wall of the castle?
No, the wall entrance to Level 8.
I tried long jumping from the right parapet on top of the fortress tower to the caged island, but was only able to bump the side of it.
What do you mean by the right parapet? I should think whatever you long jump from would have to be at least as tall as Whomp.
19) E?t2 Tika La?a (Bowser in the Fire Sea)
21) E?t3 Hea?en (Bowser in the Sky)
Note that all letters are in capitals. These two options convinced me that the ? is a V.

By the way, I just got the Board Bowser's Sub star without the sub present. I jumped from one of the poles. You just have to jump from high on the pole and aim carefully. And as I already knew from watching a video of this being done, you don't teleport to the bottom like you do when you collect the 100-coin star on a pole. You just sink a little bit into the water.

qqwref: No, the wall entrance to Level 8.
You don't enter Big Boo's Haunt by a wall, but by being sucked into a small cage. Are you sure we're talking about the same level?
What do you mean by the right parapet? I should think whatever you long jump from would have to be at least as tall as Whomp.
The top of the tower in Whomp's Fortress, where the second star is. I ran along the stone wall at the top to get the best height. And that's definitely higher than Whomp.

Hey, all. I'm not really well versed when it comes to glitches for this game, but I was playing with the Super Speed code (totally forgot that my old gameshark works with this game & thanks, Pablo for the code), and I just can't control Mario. I got him inside the castle, and he went flying through walls & straight through the door leading to the basement. He's now trapped in a room of death. Not necessarily black, but some parts are loaded. The floor, for a few steps, is tiled, and the door's there, but when he opens it (the screen fades as if the game loads normally), he goes back to the stairs, but there's an invisible wall there, & the room above the stairs doesn't load. Also, the Moon Jump isn't complimented by the code.

Just now I got Mario to go straight through the gate for Chain Chomp's star, and Mario wouldn't move once I got back there. I grabbed the star, but nothing happened 'cept the music quit. The sound effects still happen, but not the music.

Well, sorta, genetalistically speaking, but you're bang on, luv. Also: Big Boo's Haunt is lvl 5; the bob-omb can be carried over to the corner of Chain Chomp's gate (you can actually get some good speed by double-jumping your way over, and no I didn't use GS, 'cept for inf. health while experimenting), but I just haven't been able to get Mario to cooperate enough to either set the bomb down in time, or turn him around so the explosion pushes him in that direction, before the toy explodes. Did anybody else try that¿

I just got my Gameshark in the mail a few days ago, and I've found a few glitches using the moonjump code. I noticed that you can moonjump when the game doesn't want you to move (such as walking through a door, collecting a star, and talking to someone). If you moonjump to collect a star instead of jumping, you won't collect it, letting you get multiple stars without exiting the level (it won't add to your total stars, though). If you collect two stars this way, the music will stop playing, but nothing else out of the ordinary will happen. The same thing will happen if you jump regularly, but as soon as you touch the star, moonjump.

Also, after you collect a star by moonjumping, if you face a boss and collect the star by moonjumping, not only will the music stop, but all of the enemies, cannons, and coins will disappear also.
One more glitch, if you moonjump as soon as you go through the door to the stairway and hold down, you'll get stuck in between the lobby and the stairway and won't be able to get out.
Sorry if any of this has been found out before.

For those level select names, I was wondering about those glitched characters, so I searched through the ROM and found the actual text. It turns out qqwref was right: the ? character was used as a V and X, and all other times it translated to a % sign (37 in ASCII), but it seems like it was meant as a & sign (38 in ASCII). So, for example, level #31 reads: FIREB1 & INVLC. ("Fireball & in volcano" perhaps...)
I haven't looked through the whole ROM, but while browsing through it, I uncovered the following bit of text:

I haven't looked through the whole ROM, but while browsing through it, I uncovered the following bit of text:

I just found another glitch about five minutes ago. First you need the moonjump and super speed code. Enter the room that take you to the basement and go through the door. As soon as Mario starts to go through the door, hold L. Mario should fly backwards and go through the door going to the courtyard. Then you enter what I like to call the "Reverse Black Room of Death". It's the same as the regular BRoD except that you are on the completely black side instead of the partly loaded side. If you go back through the door, you'll be in the regular BRoD again.

I have found yet another glitch. As Mario, get in a cannon. At any time before firing, moonjump. You'll notice the cannon's aim is going higher and higher. Before you get high enough to die, fire the cannon. Let yourself hit the ground and moonjump (you'll be stuck otherwise). You'll be invisible. In addition, the cannon will completely disappear and you can get inside the hole and be able to see under the course if you position the cannon right.

Oh, and by entering Lethal Lava Land (I think that is what its called) when you have the super speed code, Mario will fly around the screen (once I'm pretty sure I got him outsie the Level's bounderies (he got stuck though)).

Big Boos Haunt is Level 5 isn't it?
This is why I like to stick with course names.
baldeagle18: He's now trapped in a room of death. Not necessarily black, but some parts are loaded. The floor, for a few steps, is tiled, and the door's there, but when he opens it (the screen fades as if the game loads normally), he goes back to the stairs, but there's an invisible wall there, & the room above the stairs doesn't load.
Hah! That's a totally fake stairway. You got in the "black room" behind the basement exit. It is the partner room to the one with the tiled floor you were just in. Remember that black rooms of death come in pairs. The great thing about this particular pair of black rooms is that you can get there without any gameshark. It involves the bunny. Dom Dunc has the instructions. Remember, it ain't real magic until you can do it without a gameshark.
Just now I got Mario to go straight through the gate for Chain Chomp's star, and Mario wouldn't move once I got back there. I grabbed the star, but nothing happened 'cept the music quit. The sound effects still happen, but not the music.
You could be on to a clue as to why we can't get through the gate with the cork box. There may be a "moveable boundary" which is the gate itself when it is there, and becomes the back of the room when the gate is gone.
ameba2: Probably you grabbed it while using the Moon Jump code...
baldeagle18: Well, sorta, genetalistically speaking, but you're bang on, luv...the bob-omb can be carried over to the corner of Chain Chomp's gate (you can actually get some good speed by double-jumping your way over, and no I didn't use GS, 'cept for inf. health while experimenting), but I just haven't been able to get Mario to cooperate enough to either set the bomb down in time, or turn him around so the explosion pushes him in that direction, before the toy explodes. Did anybody else try that¿
Let me get this clear. Did you get behind the gate without the gameshark? What are the exact instructions?
MarioSuperFan: One more glitch, if you moonjump as soon as you go through the door to the stairway and hold down, you'll get stuck in between the lobby and the stairway and won't be able to get out.
That sounds like you got into the "fake spiral stairs room", another black room of death.

Maybe you can get under the castle in a similar way, even if only to see if Mario gets "stuck" when down there as well. At least then we know we're dealing with a place that's out of bounds.

Well, if you hold L, you'll kind of bounce up the stairs, through the door leading to all of the boos and the entrance to level 5, and be stuck in a BRoD except Mario is in the completely back side instead of the partly loaded area. Sorry if I wasn't clear before.

Oh, and it wasn't a BRoD between the lobby and the stairway. Try jumping on top of the door. Similar to how you can't get behind the waterfall after you drain the moat, it won't let you all the way back. Basically you enter the BRoD, then jump where it wouldn't let you pass. Mario will get stuck there. Again, sorry if I wasn't clear before.

Oh, and I think the reason Mario flew around in Lethal Lava Land, was because I had the super speed code. When Mario is in the air, he'll automatically fly to the end of the level. Because Mario was in the lava and flew into the air, he flew to the end of the level, but because most of the level is lava, 4 out of 5 times he'll hit the lava again, so he has to continue flying. I also had the infinite power cheat on, so he had to keep flying until he hit the ground, but he was going so fast, that as soon as I thought he was outside of the level's boundaries the game froze. So I don't think it would be possible to do it outside of the castle due to the lack of anything to make Mario go fast enough without stopping.

No, I didn't get back there without the gameshark. The only time I got back there was with the superspeed code. Don't worry, I know a glitch isn't much good unless it's done legit. What I was referring to, was a previous post where someone asked if it was possible to carry the nearby bob-omb over to the gate, and use its explosion to push you through the wall. In a reply, it was mentioned that it'd be impossible to get a bob-omb over to that corner without it exploding, so I decided to try it out for sure, & figured I'd post the result. It is possible to carry the bob-omb over, but I had trouble getting Mario to position himself & the bob-omb even close to where the explosion can move him in that particular direction.

Mini Mario!
This can ONLY be done with a cheating utility.
OK, equip a Moon Jump code, then go to the Courtyard, and as you are being transported into Boo's Mansion turn on the code and moon jump out of the range of the thingy. You are now Mini Mario. Yoiu won't be at the same size every time. You can do nothing but a single jump, which is just barely big enough to get you up the stairs. You can walk on the bottom of the water sometimes. If you go through the door, you will return to normal. If you fall asleep, you may float above the ground. If you would be walking in the fountain in normal size, you will walk in your new size, EVEN IF you're completely underwater. You can fall asleep underwater. If you get hurt from falling, you should return to normal size, although you have to be insanely high for this. You can climb trees, but you cannot get to them without using the code again. You can still read signs. You can't kill Boos. You will walk sort of slowly. If you have already done this, you must leave and kill the Boo again.

I was playing around with that glitch that makes you invisible with the cannon, and if you simply fall after you moonjump without firing the cannon, you can move around while in that view. The controls are backwards, so you'll have to press down to go up, left to go right, etc. it's pretty fun to play around with, and just press A at any time to go back to normal (Well, almost. He'll still be invisible).

I still don't know what you mean by the "completely black (or back) side" and the "partly loaded" area. Are you still talking about the BRoD at the door leading to the courtyard, or the BRoD (tile room and fake stairs) at the keyed basement entrance?

Well, I'll try to explain it more clearly. The partly-loaded area would be like the part of the red capet in the lobby in the first BRoD and the completely black side would be a side where you couldn't see any part of that area; just black. Now that I think about it, its not that different from any other BRoD. I guess its more of an alternate way to get into that BRoD. Do you understand it now?

I've been in there several times, and it's just a regular BROD. You can see a similar effect in you enter the BROD behind the door in the moat.

In most of the doors inside, like the wooden ones, the room on the other side doesn't load until you come near the door. The rooms are either loaded or they're not, although specific objects in the rooms (like doors, toads, etc) may be loaded when the rooms they are in aren't.
But warping doors (the kind with BRoDs) are different. This isn't a situation of something "partly loaded". They are totally loaded. It's just that there's not much there to load; many of them are just enclosed in black walls. Now granted some BRoDs are designed more completely. The fake stair rooms look just like the stairways that you warp to when you go in the door. It isn't a partly loaded real stairway you are seeing, but a completely loaded replica, though that replica has some incomplete features, like ending part way up at a black wall, and having an invisible wall.
The BRoDs that are black actually don't resemble anything, and are thus incomplete in their design. The original BRoD Should have been designed to look like the short hallway into the lobby, and it's "mate" on the inside could have had its walls painted in outdoor colors (like the snow mural in Cool, Cool Mountain) rather than being just black which doesn't make sense when you are supposed to be walking out into daylight.

Hey, Slash... Though I don't seem to get on the boards quite as much recently, I do 'member you from the PD boards. :P
I've only found 1 glitch on this game purely by accident (flying while dead: sent it to GameWinners nigh forever ago; also posted it on this board quite a while ago, and was received as not yet discovered). I just thought I'd drop by & try out new stuff, as well as seeing if I could provide any useful input.

As a question for veteran "glitchers", Any info/links to threads on how y'all got started, found out that certain things happen under certain circumstances (light Chuck-Ya, for instance)¿ Thanks.

That's a good question, I think the first glitch I ever found was the Black room of Death. I found it shortly after getting 120 stars. I was just messing around on the roof and managed to get through the wall. Then I found out that you could reach the castle roof with 0 stars in a games magazine cheat section, but I didn't have the skill to pull it off back then. (this was all 1997) Then I found the original Secrets topic and found out about the backwards longjump and the secret lagoon etc. and started posting semi-regularly.
I'd like to know what got Bullet Bill interested in glitches since he seems to be the most knowledgeable on this board.
