==The Secrets Of Super Mario 64 III==
From: ToiletDuck64 | Posted: 1/8/2005 4:30:18 AM | Message Detail
What would happen if you...got your 100-coin star directly over a cannon?

You'd probably fall to the bottom of the well and do the dance, then after closing the popup the cannon would activate.

Erm...no, I think you'd probably land in the cannon normally, and the "collect 100-coin star, etc." stuff wouldn't happen unless you landed on either the ground or water. (the same way Mario can survive in a cannon if he is out of health)

I don't know what stone you're talking about. You mean he will be swimming under the rim of the lake when it is high, like in www.mzrg.com/Mario3.jpg?

Yeah, not a specific stone, just the stone rim.

I thought if you did that, you'd fall through the dry crack under the wall. The water doesn't extend beyond the wall.

www.mzrg.com/Mario5.jpg

Where are you here? It looks like the hill at the start, but the hidden water area looks too small.

The problem with the water under the start area is that there isn't very much of it, and since it's under a 'ceiling' it's very hard to maneuver around under there. That is the hill at the start, but as you can see there isn't much to see under there. I got under, mashed a few buttons, was there, and couldn't get out. Whatever. Weird.

I tried that. But he doesn't push you through the wall. I don't know yet whether it's because boundaries have a higher resistance or because there is a small slope at the foot of the cliff.

That small slope is really annoying. Grr.

What I noticed is that normal events are disabled during the "star dance." That includes death from falling (you go clear to the bottom) and being burned by fire (the flames go right through you). I am assuming that the cannon event would also be disabled. Remember that I am talking about if you collected the actual star right above the cannon, not the coin.

I finally did it. I went through the wall hand hooked under the hill into the water. You're right that you spend most of your time watching Lakitu wuffle the hill top.

What I was hoping was that Mario could swim down through the sand floor underneath like he can under the cannon hill. That's why I am hoping there is a way to leap across the dry gap while underground.

I saw some of your extra screenshots there, but they looked like moonjumps.

What extra screenshots? Those five (Mario1 to 5) weren't done with moonjumps, but I may have posted something back when I was experimenting with moonjumping and holding a Chuckya about a month ago.

I don't think this is useful, but I found another part where you can do the backwards long jump trick: the L is real/Eternal Star/whatever statue. The problem is, you have to bounce on the ghosts while doing the backwards long jump and land in the exact point of the statue (just in front of the star), so you can start mashing the A button to gain speed (you can do this from both sides of the statue). At first I thought that with the speed you could go through the door and end in another Black Room of Death, but you can't, because just when you arrive to the door, Mario hangs to the part over the door (don't know how to explain it :P).

I have a couple glitches. I know one is new, but the other may be old.

Walking UP the ship's wall

Die with nothing on screen (without GS codes)

Get down to 2 blocks and jump down after an elevator. Land on the elevator. It will continue going down while Mario is dying, and most times, Mario will actually die while he is off screen.

I think this one is new.

I was fighting the first Bowser for fun and I accidentaly threw him off the platform. Everyone who has played this game knows that the first Bowser doesn't make a shockwave when he jumps back, so I thought I was safe. I line myself up so that he would land right in front of me so I could grab his tail. Right after he landed, I took 3 damage for no apparent reason. He did not land on me and I did not hit anything, so maybe he makes a small invisible shockwave in his immediate vicinity. Or something.

That glitch reminds me... I once glitched inside the ship's walls while it was submerged. I swam into the blackness in the ship's window, but I wasn't transported into the room with the chests. I somehow made it through the black walls and could swim around under the deck.
From: Majora4 | Posted: 1/11/2005 11:28:40 PM | Message Detail
For the first and second bowsers the shockwave is there, but it's invisible. If you're really close, you take damage, if you're somewhat close, you'll just bounce a little and be uncontrollable for 1-2 seconds, but if you're far enough away, nothing will happen.

While were on the subject of Bowser, Bowser's face is not solid. Stand back and jump into Bowser as he lands. You'll go through his face but then get hurt when you touch his body. You can do the trick anytime. Get close as he's walking and jump. You can safely pass through the mouth, but the body hurts. Odd..

I dived into Bowser with 1 block of health left and this was the result. Bowser kept moving and ran over Mario. The camera phased out Bowser's shell so the player could see Mario. Or something like that...

It is like the swimming in the darkness outside the sunken ship idea, only in reverse. Was the ships walls rendered on the inside? Can you reproduce the glitch, and figure out how it is done?

I tried on an emulator and was able to reproduce the glitch, by swimming into the very left side of the black window. Once past the warping point, it takes a little maneuvering to get through the wall. I might have just been lucky the first time I got it to work. You can swim through the ship's walls while inside.

New camera trick in Whomp's Fortress: Switch to Lakitu<>Stop mode. Stand Mario on top of the blast-away wall with the star inside it. Angle the camera so that the tip of the wall lines up with the sleeping piranha near the start point. Freeze the camera and run Mario down to the piranha. The wall will disappear before your eyes, revealing the star. You can walk back and forth near the start point and the wall will keep appearing and disappearing.

This trick also gives the lie to one of the classic Luigi hoaxes.

OK, I just did it. You have to get Whomp on the edge as close as possible to the cage, get on top of him when he gets up, and long jump to the cage off the side closer. You can just barely make it onto the cage! It looks like it is possible as your second star.

What? You give up already? Fine...

1.Go to any small door in the lobby. (Cool Cool Mountain and Whomp's Fortress work best)

2.Go inside the room.

3.Now, come back out.

4.Immediately jump back to the other side of the door before the door closes all the way. (jump through the door) You should now be in the room you just came out of.

5.You must now go back out to the lobby without letting the camera move at all.

If you did this right, the game will be confused and think you're going into the room you just left (not the lobby) and will treat the camera like you were in that room.

You can now use c-left and c-right in the lobby!

Of course, sooner or later, the game will recognize its mistake and revert back to the normal camera.

Brightguy: "If you try placing one of those cork boxes on that disappearing wall, it will fall right through it after you walk away (even before the wall disappears)."

This is something we should try other places. Try putting a cork box on top of various objects in the game and see if it falls when (or before) they disappear during the stop cam trick. Bob-Omb Battlefield for example.

I've been wondering this for a while, and now I've finally remembered to ask:

Why is the Black Room of Death called the Black Room of Death? It's not like you die upon entering it. Also, if it wasn't there, Mario would die upon opening the door because he would be out of bounds, right?

Ultrachao: I know that the rabbit is nicknamed MIPS, but what does "MIPS" mean? Is it short for something?

MIPS is short for Millions of Instructions Per Second, basically something they touted the N64's processor of being able to achieve.

peteyboo: Why is the Black Room of Death called the Black Room of Death? It's not like you die upon entering it. Also, if it wasn't there, Mario would die upon opening the door because he would be out of bounds, right?

I'm just guessing, but I would assume it's just a play on the whole "Blue Screen Of Death" thing. If you get the BSOD in Windows, you don't die, but you have to reboot for anything to work. Same thing initially with this room, you had to reset to get out because there was no known way out at the time (as gstlaivanrules said).

What ever happened to David Wonn? The content on his site hasn't been updated at all since 2002. That means it's still is lacking the 16-star completion strategy!

Time flies... I still remember in early 2003 the first time I beat the game with 50 stars, and then on the same day I did it with 31 as well. I remember thinking that I could reveal the 31-star completion strategy on his site... heh, I guess it will never make it up there. And someone else on this board discovered the trick as well. Anyway, it looks like Dom Dunc followed in his footsteps, right?
