==Secrets of SM64, Part 4==
From: Bullet Bill | Posted: 7/29/2005 2:12:09 AM | Message Detail
When I tried it on the Boo elevator, I only got the BLJs on the way up, but his BLJs stopped glitching when he reached the top.

I did get some effects in HMC however. Both on the elevator from the red coin level to the black hole room, and on the elevator leading to the amazing emergency exit, Mario shot through the wall to some dark place and died like he was falling somewhere. When I did it in the underground lake elevator, the game froze.

When you got that glitch with the merrygoground view from a distance, it's possible that Lakitu remained stuck back in the elevator room, which was at the time unrendered since Mario was now in the merrygoround.

This seems to throw cold water (no pun intended) on any hopes of getting into the large lake outside the elevator tunnel. Since that is the most obvious place for Mario to end up, and none of the outcomes included it, it must be "out of bounds".

It appears that an out of bounds can cause either a death, a freeze, or warping Mario to a random in-bounds location, depending on how the error handlers are set up in the course.

Umm, everyone disregarded my posts, so I'll do it again.

[offtopic]Do you want to see the beta leftovers in you ROM? Then here's your chance. Simply download the file, UnRAR it, and Open viewer. Click Open ROM select an ABCD byteordered SM64 ROM. Then either find next or select a specific address. If you are unsure if your ROM is ABCD or not, go here and download the file. Please note that color is not 100% perfect as of now. If you would like perfect color, you would have to download the decompressor and view with a dissassembler.[/offtopic]

[offtopic] Being an ACMLMer and a contibuter to the SM64 ROM hacking team I was wondering if I could have the honor of creating the Secrets of SM64, Part 5?.[/offtopic]

I care more about the second one.

Dom, I'll be anxious to see your new "mysterious floor" glitch. I don't suppose it involves the elevator glitch that you just discovered. Since you plan to make a video, you must have found a more consistant way to do it.

Under Big Boo's Merry-go-round, without a GameShark and on an actual console

If you saw Hawkeye's video on the last page, my technique is prett similar to that, except with slight tweaks to prevent the game from crashing.

It's pretty simple really, you do the backwards longjumps on the lift, then about 2/3 of the way up, stop the longjumps and push the stick into the wall. Mario should hang there. Now let go of the stick and he should slam into the ground where it will appear that he is stuck. Now hold the stick in the opposite direction to the way you want to go, and tap jump to try and get him moving. He should appear to teleport around and get stuck again. Keep positioning the stick away from the direwction you want to go it, and tap jump to move again. With a bit of luck you should push into Big Boo's merry-go-round and land on the stell floor underneath it.

Stag019: We are aiming to get the next part of the Secret's topic Stickeyed, so that we don't have to keep bumping it. That means that we're going to have descriptions of the major glitches and links to video etc in the first few posts, and we're going to have to present them nicely. It depends on whether you think you're up to doing that.

Great video! I just have one question: Each time he goes up the elevator, is that a different "clip" or was it all recorded in one segment?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking...

I recdorded all three attempts in one sitting, then I cut out the running around and failed attempts between them. Each time I go up the elevator is a different attempt though.

Yeah thats what I was asking. I was wondering if you recorded it all at once without putting different segments together and if Mario had just appeared at the elevator each time you did the trick.

Let me get something in the instructions clear. You said a few times to move the stick opposite to the "direction you want to go." Does that mean that when Mario gets stuck, you move the stick one way, and by doing little jumps he will move the opposite way?

And does he just keep on getting stuck again as many times as you want, or does he run out of superspeed charge eventually?

Did you find a route between "stuck points" that can get you under the merrygoround consistantly?

Unclear in the video is: once under the merrygoround, can you get unstuck and walk around under there?

Sorry I'm late.

I've done what you requested and wrote a small guide with the Infinite Coin Glitches, excluding the Moneybag Glitch. I'll probably need some help to write that one. I've posted it in a new topic. I would suggest that we move all coin glitch discussions to that topic and only post here if we find something major, such as new Infinite Coin Glitches. (Or any secret that could be related to coins.)

Most of the information I wrote in that topic is old and already mentioned, but I have tested some stuff and written it in a better way. Anybody should be able to understand it.

I also suggets that all questions about collecting hard coins (such as the last Bully in LLL...) is asked in that topic. I would then recommend that the Coin Topic and/or the fifth Secrets Topic gets stickied. Does that sound good?

Brightguy: You have my permission to copy the Infinite Coin Glitches in my topic and put it in your Coin FAQ or in a new Infinite Coin Glitch FAQ.

For now, I'm leaving this topic until I find something to contribute. Take care, people.

Bill:"You said a few times to move the stick opposite to the "direction you want to go." Does that mean that when Mario gets stuck, you move the stick one way, and by doing little jumps he will move the opposite way?"

Correct. But he appears to 'warp' he's moving so fast.

"And does he just keep on getting stuck again as many times as you want, or does he run out of superspeed charge eventually?"

He runs out eventually, yes. The problem is getting the balance between lots of speed, and not crashing the game. If you don't do enough BLJs he doesn't get enough speed to go through walls.

"Did you find a route between "stuck points" that can get you under the merrygoround consistantly?"

No I didn't, I just pointed Mario away from the merry-go-round and hoped for the best, and that worked pretty well.

"Unclear in the video is: once under the merrygoround, can you get unstuck and walk around under there?"

Yes you can, but the camera doesn't like it under there, so it's tough to see where you're going. In the video I actually walk around a little but you can's see it because the camera's above the floor.

Wow, another great glitch... another challenge no longer impossible.

For the start of the next 'Secrets' topic, we were planning on including some other summaries, like a detailed description of the backwards long jump, and how to get onto the castle roof without the cannon (I've made new videos of both methods). In my opinion, to be fair, there should be a vote for who starts the next topic. Clearly there are a lot of active people... Dom Dunc or Bullet Bill would be good choices I think.

If you want to have input into what will be included in the topic, see this thread: domdunc.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1121947741

As for ROM hacking, I was curious and ripped the "L is real" texture out of the game: www.sm64.com/pics/courtyardplaque.png
For some reason the ripped version from the "L is real" topic looks different, as if someone highlighted certain pixels to outline letters. Some pixels don't match up between the two.

Also, I just found a new secret: an invisible pillar in the middle of the air that pushes you into a small secret area. It's not that great, but I'm going to hold off with the details of this one until Part 5!

In any case, even if he had, it's not exactly Dom's "right" to promise it to anyone, i agree with Brightguy, there should definitely be a vote by those who have contributed secrets and glitches.

I agree! Personally I think Brightguy would be a good choice, or Bullet Bill. If Brightguy has new videos of the older glitches, it would be good to have them linked from the beginning. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be away when this topic ends so I'm probably out of the running...

If I end up doing it, I will most likely collect some little-mentioned glitches from my collection, with possible links to their source. And a summary of popular glitches.

Brightguy: You're right, your rip of l is real does look different. The distinct look of land xy player is not there. This could be a mere difference of gamma correction.

I only know of one invisible pillar in the game, and it's related to a place we've just been discussing. But it has not pushed me into any secret areas.

So many people have asked questions about the BLJ, from how to do it to how to do it perfectly and everything in between. What exactly is it that people don't get about the descriptions?

Seeing as we're doing the new secrets topic soon it would be helpful if people could say exactly which aspect of it they don't get or can't do so we can come up with a water tight explanation as i realise saying "its all timing" doesn't really help newcomers. I think this is the most common thing (along with MIPS) people ask about, so i think it would be a good idea to come up with an explanation that covers everything that may go wrong. i tried giving an explanation in the latest thread about the BLJ on this board, but to someone who wasn't sure i doubt my explanation helped at all so anyone else fell like having a go?

Part 5 should start off with a short intro, and then perhaps mention some related websites, like
www.systemcrash.tk (www.angelfire.com/pro/glitches/index.htm) and www.billygard.com/mario
Also point out that the previous topics are archived at www.sm64.com/archive

Then a "water tight" explanation of the backwards long jump would be a good start (with video), followed by a description of the 16-star completion (with video). And I think getting onto the castle roof without the cannon should be mentioned (with videos of both methods). And so on...

Bullet Bill, if you're going to do it, could you post in the topic I linked to in my previous post, with the glitches you want to include / descriptions if you have them? The more people who give input, the better, I think. (You could do it here, but I don't think there's enough posts left...) I'll post the links to my videos in that topic once they're up.

I only know of one invisible pillar in the game, and it's related to a place we've just been discussing.
In the centre of the merry-go-round? I noticed that before as well. You can even wall kick off of it, unlike the other invisible pillar I just found...

Just out of interest---I learnt something new (to me---but I'm sure completely standard for most of you) about the BLJ when doing it on the elevators in BBH: what starts the glitch off is, I think, when mario actually *stops* long-jumping backwards. Hear me out and tell me if you agree. [I should say that I don't think this will be of any help to anyone who can't do the BLJ.]

During the course of a game, mario occasionally gets stuck in a funny situation: his legs are running forwards but he's going backwards. This happens to me quite a lot when I fail to get onto the roof of the castle with 0 stars, on the right: I don't time a jump up onto the steep hill face and end up falling back onto the ground, going quite quickly backwards, and even if I try and run forwards all I do is slow down and keep moving backwards, just more and more slowly as Mario regains control. Mario's "ambient velocity" is backwards even though he's trying to change it by running forwards.

It's quite difficult, I think, to put Mario in a situation where he's on the ground and not sliding or falling or what have you, but still has a non-zero "ambient velocity". We know a couple of tricks including BLJ and falling off the steep grass face outside the castle, and probably other people will know of other instances where this happens. It might be important to understand why this change in ambient velocity occurs. I don't really understand it myself. I should also say that I *think* that the only possible direction you can be going when you have non-zero ambient velocity is backwards! [technical note: the ambient velocity is relative to Mario, so even if he turns around he still keeps going backwards-relative-to-him]

The key point though is that Nintendo failed to put any bounds on this velocity, and I think that this must be what makes the BLJ work. The reason I think this is that when you do BLJs on the elevator in BBH, but when you don't get enough speed up to actually start doing anything super-glitchy, you just end up racing round the tunnels very fast backwards. The BLJ, like falling off the steep grass face, is somehow triggering an increase in ambient velocity, but the BLJ is doing it so effectively that we get the glitches.

This may have been mentioned before but I don't think I'd ever explicitly realised it until just recently.
