==The Secrets Of Super Mario 64 Revived==

Smithkakarot, if it makes you feel any better, I've mentioned getting in the dry pipe a number of times without people taking note of it (probably because it appeared an impossible dream), until finally tonight Dom Dunc of 16 star fame responds to it and announces that he's done it!
I see no reason why camera glitches can't get you in the glitch hall of fame. I have in fact done the glitch you described, using the penguin in Cool, Cool Mountain. I don't know if I have it posted though. Since Choclairs expected the list to top off at 15, there should be plenty of room for you to get your name up in lights.
While I am here I'll get another camera glitch in: go into Bom-Omb's Battlefield. Freeze the camera near the start point, and walk Mario to the field where the stone cannon hill is. You will see water bombs appearing out of nowhere in mid air.
Also, Dom Dunc, I already have a guess as to how you got in the dry pipe. You probably already know my idea. I'm itching to see if your method turns out to be the same one. It's a white knuckler though, and I'm still in the training phase of it.

Awesome DD!! After a while of just thinking it through, I decided to try it out. After a lot of frustration, and a few bags of chips, I finally got it!:) Great work on yet another interesting piece of work.

Great vid Dom! That's what I did, but it took me forever to do. I kept falling off of the red roof, and Mario never wanted to grab onto the grating.

I looked almost with disbelief when I saw you actually do it. Excellent! The problem is that you have to control Mario while he is burning. And you have to hit that tiny pillar. Do you think his being on fire contributes to his jumping height? Maybe you could pick up one of the caps first so that the fire will not hurt you.
Also strange because when I got into the pipe using the Gameshark method Mario didn't pop to the upper area; he just started swimming. I know you are suposed to pop up to the surface when you encroach on a water area from the side. But in this particular experiment the effect of having a ceiling in the way had different outcomes.
Now I wonder if this method is easier than the proposed "swim like mad" idea, which is the white knuckle method I've been proposing.

Bullet Bill: Glad you liked the video! It took enough effort.
"Do you think his being on fire contributes to his jumping height?
Yes, I do. I tried many times to pull this jump off with all sorts of different jumping methods, the problem is that the red roof is so slipery that unless you get set on fire you can't make it to the opposite side at full speed (i.e. You have to triple jump over it, which is much slower than long jumping, and long jumping is not long enough to get over... Catch 22) To my knowledge being set on fire is the only way to build up enough speed to make the jump. I hope someone comes up with an easier method, as I have some experimenting to do in that pipe...
By the way, I had a ton of failed, but still cool attempts, e.g. I missed getting set on fire so I slid to the left instead of straint and jumped, ending up on top of the orange roof opposite the pipe entrance.
"Also strange because when I got into the pipe using the Gameshark method Mario didn't pop to the upper area; he just started swimming."
Right, if you're running down the pipe and enter the water to the left side of the pipe (as mario faces) you won't pop to the surface because the cannon is in the way. (I should try this with the water level lower, see if I can end up in any weird places...) But if you enter to the right, you pop to the surface.
"Now I wonder if this method is easier than the proposed "swim like mad" idea, which is the white knuckle method I've been proposing."
I tried that a few times and it seems to me to be impossible. By the time I had turned and jumped out of the water the level was always too low. I also tried getting the metal mario hat, and timing it so that I hit the crystal, jumped and changed back to normal mario at the top of the jump, to get a head start, but I still couldn't do it.

I have a question, after you do that and are sent to the top of the water, if you go back into the pipe is there water or does it stop like it was already drained?

There are probably (I'm not 100% sure because I haven't done them) a couple of tricks involving that pipe because of demand-based graphics loading...the two areas connected by it don't seem to be loaded at the same time. So you could stop the camera in the upper area, swim down through the pipe, and when (or just before) you get to the lower area, the upper area will disappear. Or you can stop the camera in the lower area, go through the pipe, and when (or just before) you get to the upper area, the lower area will disappear. Since you've successfully gotten into the pipe with the water at its lowest level, there is something very interesting you can try. Do the "dry pipe" trick, stop the camera outside this end of the pipe, and keep it stopped while you run to the other end. At the point where you get teleported up to the surface of the water in the upper area, one of two things will happen: a) the camera will stay in place and look up at an angle, or b) the camera will get teleported to the upper area.

Hot Diggity Dog! I made it into the dry pipe! Your video did wonders, Dom Dunc.
I did the long jump a few times until I finally got burned by the flame thrower. Then I jumped up and grabbed the pipe entrance on the first try.
This may be one of those cases of beginner's luck from watching a video of it being done. This is also how it happened when I finally got the triple jump onto the castle roof.
Well, Dom, you're right. There is no way to make the camera stay inside the pipe. I had to use stop cam to get screen shots from in there. And sure enough, when you walk past the graphic warp point, you are teleported to the main area. That's funny, because when I did it with the Gameshark Mario switched from walking to swimming, but stayed in the pipe. And I don't remember at that time the strange camera behavior. I wonder if that's a glitch caused by having the moonjump enabled.
You can, by the way, still swim back down into the pipe, and at the half-way point, Mario will drop and start walking. I froze the camera at the end of the pipe to get a cameo of that. I taped it after I got Mario up there.
Now I can work on my alternate "drain and swim fast" method with less pressure, and maybe my palms won't get all sweaty this time.
Now we can start to contemplate. Do you suppose that the programmers made this trick available on purpose? This would at least make sense of the fire spitter there. WOW! But since being on fire is the only way to run on the roof without sliding off it, I guess the metal cap remains a mystery still.
I guess this really can't be considered a glitch, but rather a trick, because it relies strictly on the intended behavior of Mario. However once you do it, the results are glitchy, whether Nintendo intended it or nintended it.
I had an older idea that you have to admit made sense: just pick up the vanish cap, get on the buildings and long jump right through the mesh into the pipe. It's simple, easy, and doesn't work.
Maybe those of us who like to try to make sense of the game's behavior can explain why Lakitu doesn't like being in the dry pipe.

I just found another glitch in the dry-pipe trick that may explain my observations with the Gameshark.
After getting in the dry pipe, go to the upper area and drain it to the minimum level. Then go back down to the pipe where it is dry. Turn around and walk past where Mario starts swimming. This time Mario will stay in the pipe.
But here's the clincher. Swim to the upper area, and you will find that its water has raised itself to the maximum level! Since this is my first time doing this trick, I have to do some more experimenting with this. I might try doing the trick after entering the course with low water.
I also have an idea why lakitu doesn't like being in the dry pipe. When the downtown water is low, the pipe portion past the second mesh is not included in the "gaming area". So Lakitu treats it as if it were just the empty darkness behind the wall.

Hey...I was just thinking....maybe the original use for the metal cap was to avoid being hurt by the flames when the water was lowered, and the makers never realized they didn't even spit fire...just a thought.

Bullet Bill: Yeah, I find a glitch much easier to perform once I know that it's possible ;)
OK, well I did a lot of experimenting and found out a couple of cool things:
1. When you do stop-cam in the pipe then warp to the surface the camera doesn't stay with you, you get a great shot from underground Wet-Dry world.
2. When you teleport out of the pipe the game also re-sets the water height to as high as it will go (higher than the higest crystal, it doesn't matter how deep the water was to start with). This is the only way to do this from inside the level. Many of you know that the only other way is to jump into the very top of the painting.
3. I managed to reactivate the dead fire-spitters in the town!! I kid you not. Unfortunately I didn't manage to grab a video before one tagged me and I died (honest to God!) so I can't provide proof (d'oh!) but I know what I saw and I'll do more experiments tomorrow and hopefully I'll have a method by tomorrow night.
For now, I just need sleep.

Hey DD, I did it too! I haven't found out how exactly to control the water levels, but it has something to do with rapidly entering the town. Lucky me, I survived the fire and took some pictures.

Activate the 'dead' Fire Spitters in Wet-Dry World
To activate the dead fire-spitters you need to lower the water so that they are no longer smothered by water, unfortunately there are no crystals low enough, but thnaks to the Dry-Pipe glitch, there IS a way. Simply make your way into the dry pipe and find the point at which the air turns back into water. Now jump into the water (keeping the the side of the pipe so you don't teleport to the surface) then turn around and drop out of the water now re-enter it. Repeat this many times, Now go back to the town and you should see that the water level has either raised or lowered significantly. Keep jumping in and out of the water until the water level has dropped underground. Now go up to one of the normally dead fire-spitters and it'll spit some fire at you!
I'm not entirely sure why water level drops/raises when you enter/exit the water, but my theory is that when you jump in the water, the game resets the average water level to however high it is at the time, so if you do it at the bottom of it's undulation then the level will drop and if you do it at the top, the level will rise.
Video of this method:

UPDATE: I've come up with a more efficient method, and can now put the water level anywhere I like. All the way from underground to (theoretically) above the ceiling, I also found a way into a small glitched area. I will reveal all on my website soon.

Very nice work Dom Dunc! I've been away or else I would have posted sooner. I remember Bullet Bill mentioning several times that he wished you could make it into the pipe with the water low. I just dismissed this challenge as being impossible because I have tried it unsuccessfully many times in the past. Silly me...
I've done it now as well, and played around with the water-level changing. It seemed every time I tried it the water level would go higher, and it took a long time but eventually it got so high that the water started to come into the pipe. Also, a few times while exiting the water in the pipe Lakitu would stay inside, and I would have the normal Lakitu cam while walking in the pipe. Once again you come up with some awesome glitches!
After playing around in the town for a while it really does become apparent that the game designers left something unfinished here... there's no real point to the metal cap and the drowned fire-shooters, and very little point to the ! switch. When I had the water-level slightly higher than normal, I realised the only way to hit the ! switch was to use the metal cap, and then you would actually need to use the block that appears as a boost out of the water so you can make it to the star. Hmmm...
Previously, the only other main glitch I had looked for in the town besides entering the dry pipe was trying to swim outside of the town walls, or finding a way to collect the "Quick Race Through Downtown!" star without the vanish cap... no good progress though.

What was the purpose of the ! switch?? I've never EVER used it.

I was wondering the same thing, I've activated the switch before, but never noticed any differences caused by it.
Also just wanted to say that I've added a full description of the dry-pipe trick to my website, along with descriptions of all the resulting glitches.

The ! Switch in the downtown causes large cork boxes to appear in the cage where the star is.

I found this weird thing that has to do with outside the castle.
I was playing around with the cannon and the top of the castle, and see if i could find more walls that are messed up. At one point i fell down on the right (facing the door) and so i started to make my way to the cannon. I wanted to get there quickly so i long jumped off the bridge towards the cannon. Halfway there i hit an invisible wall (thump thump thump wahoowa! BOINK! oofa! splash!) i was weirded out about the invisable wall so i tried to get to it again. I hit it once more but it seemed to have disappeared afterwards O_O
This is sorta how it looked

I'll be waiting for that new efficient way to change the water level. I haven't yet got around to trying the fire spitter glitch because of the random nature of changing the water height when you can't see it.
Brightguy came up with some things that cause the metal cap and the ! switch to actually make sense. The switch merely causes a small cork box to appear at the bottom of the timbers inside the cage, as if to give you a stepping stone. But you can get up there easily with a wall kick, and the box isn't big enough to be useful for anything but to be in the way. But if the water level were a little higher, not only would the cork box be necessary, but the metal cap would also be needed to hit the ! switch. So maybe this making of small random changes in water level is something the programmers had in mind, maybe by just swimming through the pipe several times. But then the starting point would be the water's high level, not its low one.
I wonder if, after messing with the water height, touching a crystal would restore the water to one of the "normal" heights, or if the offset would be kept the same (high water minus two feet would become low water minus two feet). If the water is drained below the ground, does touching the low crystal do anything? Does touching the high crystal restore it to full height?
Maybe just swimming back and forth in the right place in the pipe can lower the downtown water level bit by bit from its highest point to below the ground.
These may be what DD's update will reveal. And I can't wait for his new secret area.

I'll be waiting for that new efficient way to change the water level.
I have now revealed this method on my website (however the video is out of date, i'll update it today). The gist is, when you're walking in the pipe, fiddle with the camera so you can see the water's surface. Now, when the water is at it's highest point, jump into the wall of water. Now turn around and jump out. Look at the water's surface again and jump in again at it's highest point. Now repeat as much as you like. Using this method you can raise the water level as high as you like. Of course with also works to lower the hight if you jump into the wall of water when the water's at it's lowest ebb.
But if the water level were a little higher, not only would the cork box be necessary, but the metal cap would also be needed to hit the ! switch.
This would make sense, except for the fact that the programmers clearly didn't think you'd be inside the pipe while the water level was low. So they can't have anticipated the water level being as high as you describe.
So maybe this making of small random changes in water level is something the programmers had in mind, maybe by just swimming through the pipe several times.
You're right about this, I tried to lower the water level by swimming through the loading point multiple times but could only lower the water level by a few feet. The problem is that there is no way of seeing the water level while swimming inside the pipe.
I wonder if, after messing with the water height, touching a crystal would restore the water to one of the "normal" heights
This does happen. Even if the level is only slightly low or high.
Well, either way, it looks like we've cleared out you're 'More Secrets Wanted' section for Wet-Dry World. ;)

It's confirmed! You CAN control the water heights even if the pipe is not dry. You just need to swim in circles around the warp point, and if you're not sure were that point is, pause the game and check if the camera stays behind Mario or if goes outside.
I'm also working on a new death glitch in this same spot. Its not that hard to guess what am I trying to do, right? ;)

Ok, I'm not sure whether this is considered a glitch, but it is pretty weird.
Mario Snow Plough:
In Snowman's Land, go to the area with the thing that generates those hills of ice. From there, get past the hills as if you were climbing the snowman. Stop and use c-up to look around. Above you and to the left, you will see the fencing that surrounds the igloo. Do a turnaround jump and will-kick off that wall, landing back where all those hills are sliding. If you've fallen far enough, Mario's legs will sink into the snow, but the hills will still push him while he is partially underground. This technique also works with the ground pound (Mario's butt will be stuck in the snow) and the dive (Mario's head will be stuck in the snow).

Hey. Today I was getting the 100 coins in Tick Tock Clock, and something really weird happend. I went up to the first of the rotating platforms which you get the red coins on, and I somehow merged with it. After a while I fell out, but it took half of my life.

When I watched the fire spitter glitch video, I saw something kind of eerie. Both times that a fire spitter activated, the video and sound slowed down to half speed. Amazing coincidence.
Anyway, it seems that my beginner's luck ran out on the dry pipe trick. So now I'm just going to have to become good at it! I kept getting burned by the fire spitter on the roof, but was unable to get to the jump fast enough. The problem is that you eventually run out of power and have to make a long trip to regenerate it.
And here's another quirk with a warning: once I did grab the grating, however, if you grab it on the left or right end, the angled wall above will keep you from lifting yourself up!!!!!!! You have to become good enough to aim at the middle!
So here's what I did: When all else fails, do it the long way. I went up into the pipe and lowered the water from the very highest level to below the ground! I used stop camera to watch the water's undulations as I swam back and forth. I had to keep making trips for air until I brought the water surface down into the pipe and could then get the air right at the load point. Eventually the water in the pipe got down to where I was walking, so I looked for another angle from which to use stop cam (I had to keep switching in and out of Lakitu<>Stop mode and feared that I might accidently select exit. But I did okay there). By then I found a small stone in the pipe wall to use as a marker for the load point. Little by little you lose health since there is no water surface nearby at this point, so periodically I let myself get warped up to the higher level to get some air. And I kept going to the other end to check how the water level was doing. Finally I saw the dry ground!
Then I stuck a tape in my machine and recorded it from there. I jumped into downtown and activated the fire spitters on the ground, and even got burned by one (No slowing of the video and sound, so that must have been a freak video glitch). And I went all over the place getting different views. I also tried all the doors to see if any of them open without water there. Sorry! they don't.
Now there's a second method of doing the dry pipe glitch, for those who have a lot of patience and not enough skill to do it the first way. Anyway, I now have a tape with the evidence of dry ground and resuscitated fire spitters. Great find, DD.
Now it's quarter to four in the morning and I must be on my way! :)

I did that on purpose, so that you could clearly see that the fire came from the fire spitters on the ground. At full speed I ran past them a bit too fast ;)
Getting the water level down from the very top must have taken you ages. Something I'm sure I don't have the patience for. I think I'll stick to my tricky jump thankyou very much.
Since you seem to have got the method down pretty well, why don't you try raising the water level to above the ceiling and see if that has any weird effects.

First of all, bump. Second, I did the "very wet" glitch, and here are the pictures from the journey:
billygard.com/mario/screens/verywet2.jpg
billygard.com/mario/screens/verywet6.jpg
Here is a view of it from the other end of the pipe:
billygard.com/mario/screens/verywet4.jpg
This is the view I use to watch the water swells:
billygard.com/mario/screens/verywet7.jpg
Here is where the water, and the skimmers, all went:
billygard.com/mario/screens/verywet8.jpg
I made another observation. I entered the course with a low jump. And the water in the main area stayed low the whole time. This made it easier to make air trips.
There are still things I haven't explored yet, such as whether Mario can be brought up to the water surface above the ceiling, and the possible effects of this water, and the skimmers, encroaching on the upper area space.

Here is a glitch that has no real purpose whatsoever, but it was fun to look at nonetheless!
In Wet-Dry World, I jumped into the cannon and shot myself to the grating that leads to town (as many players have done). You all know the mesh-cage looks like this:
_____
'.......|
'.......|
'-----|
*ignore the periods*
' and - = mesh
_ and | = wall
When I landed from the cannon blast Mario slid along the top of the wall into the upper-right hand corner (where the invisible barriers are located) and just got caught there, bouncing back and forth incessantly for a solid two or so minutes before finally falling down into the water below!

i just thought i wold suggest that one of you guys try wall jumping out of the grating hole that leads to the town in wet-dry world... just start the level with the lowest possible water.. warp to the cannon, and shoot yourself in the grating hole... their are triangular platform things in each corner so you can do a long jump to one end and start wall jumping
ive gotten half way up but i find the timing very hard although im sure one of you guys should be able to do it

Okay this is the 900th post in the Secrets topics, and with that I'm starting a two new polls:
What should be the name of the next *OFFICIAL* topic?
Who will create the *OFFICIAL* topic?
To choose the name, just suggest something. It must be in the format of ==The Secrets Of Super Mario 64==,but with an extra word added(such as revived). We cannot used revived again, and once a topic name has 10 votes than it is official.
Also, vote for someone in the Hall Of Fame to create the *OFFICIAL* next topic.Whoever has the most votes gets the honours.
I personally vote for Dom Dunc.Do you have to ask why?
