==The Secrets Of Super Mario 64 Revived==

2. DOH! (and it's not a Simpsons game)

small update on the Secret Lagoon, which i might aswell tell you about, Bullet Bill said ages ago that hethought it might be possible to swim over to the other side of the sunken ship. I have found this to be impossible, if you try to swim over any part of the ship, you are immediately transported back inside it. The only way I can see is if you made it round one of the ends, but this may not be possible either.

I've just returned and am touched. Thanks for the nomination.

"Bullet Bill said ages ago that hethought it might be possible to swim over to the other side of the sunken ship. I have found this to be impossible, if you try to swim over any part of the ship, you are immediately transported back inside it."

I did manage to swim from the first arrival point to a point right alongside the bow (dry area). But I couldn't move beyond there. I tried diving down from there and drowned. How do you swim so as to be "transported" back inside the ship? This would make it easier to return from the secret lagoon.

"OK, new topic of conversation: What type of glitches would you like to see discovered in the future?"

To get inside the Wet-Dry World pipeway when the lower level (downtown) is drained.

Right now after going over some of the glitches I collected at my site, I'd like to nominate Its a Me Mario, mainly for discovering the secret jump over the wall in the cave course, and for the "view from the darkness" glitch in the pyramid.

What's that? You want a new glitch? Well it looks like you just got your wish...

Mario inside the aquarium!

No GameShark required.

ok, here's the deal with this glitch, I'll post some screenshots of the aftermath, and reveal the method at a later date, probably after the Hall of Fame has been filled. I'm just trying to stimulate conversation on the board, and the best way is by withholding information :)

You get no clues this time either, it may sound harsh, but sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind.

well, without further ado, here are the screenshots:

http://www.otaku-universe.com/~domdunc/Aquarium1.jpg
http://www.otaku-universe.com/~domdunc/Aquarium2.jpg
http://www.otaku-universe.com/~domdunc/Aquarium3.jpg

to Bullet Bill: To teleport back into the sunken ship, simply swim out through the ceiling, when you reach the surface turn back towards the ship and swim at it, it may take a while since you swim so slowly, but eventually you'll just re-appear inside the ship.

I also add my vote for Its a me mario for a full rundown of his tricks visit Bullet Bill's Secrets section (http://billygard.home.comcast.net/mario/tips.htm) By the way Bill, your site needs updating...

"Black Rooms of Death: Has anyone been able to get Mario in the 'black room' behind the other castle entrances?

I have!

Well, assuming that when Bullet Bill nominated Its a me mario,he also voted for him, that's two votes. Now that I have seen some of his work I'm going to vote for him as well. That means that the fourth member of the Super Mario 64 Glitch Hall Of Fame is:

Its A Me Mario

That means that the current members are:

Dom Dunc
Neo Ninja
Bullet Bill
Its A Me Mario

Its a me now has 24 hours to nominate someone else.If its a me does not nominate someone within 24 hours of this post, the nomination is anyone's.Remember everyone,Dom Dunc isn't going to reveal the aquarium glitch until the Hall Of Fame is filled up,and that glitch is pretty much all that we're hanging on(until somone discovers something else that's interesting).

I'm probably not the first one to have discovered these, but I've found several weird things that happen in the game because of demand-based graphics loading...

Big Boo's Haunt:
Stop the camera inside a wall near one of the three entrances to the mansion, and get Mario close to one of the other two. Part of the inside of the mansion will appear near the door where Mario is.

Hazy Maze Cave:
While Mario is on the island in the middle of the big lake, stop the camera there. Then get Mario through the tunnel and up the elevator. As Mario approaches the door at the top of the elevator, the room with the falling rocks will appear.

Shifting Sand Land:
Get Mario into the pyramid through the top entrance and stop the camera as soon as Mario lands on the elevator. Then get Mario partway through the tunnel leading to Eyerok's tomb. If you get Mario far enough through the tunnel, the area from which Mario entered the tunnel will pop out of existence.

Tall Tall Mountain:
Stop the camera near the top of the slide leading to the "Mysterious Mountainside" star. If you let Mario slide far enough ahead, you will see this part of the slide pop out of existence.

I'm sure there are others that I missed...

"To teleport back into the sunken ship, simply swim out through the ceiling, when you reach the surface turn back towards the ship and swim at it."

You mean swimming horizontally inward toward the ship, and not a vertical descent - correct?

"Black Rooms of Death: Has anyone been able to get Mario in the 'black room' behind the other castle entrances?"

I've just done the first website update since discovering the Dom Dunc glitch. Now that question has been revised to "Black Rooms of Death. Has anyone been able to get Mario in the “black room” behind the castle's back door?"

As for its a me mario, he found a wall in the cave course you can jump over and fall directly to the underground lake. He also posted a stop-cam trick in the pyramid that allowed you to see Eyerock's Tomb from the darkness at the top of the pyramid. He may have done more, but I didn't capture it. That's why it would be great to have a feature for downloading a text file digest of a whole topic.

I tried a few fancy things with the aquaria, and I must admit I'm stumped.

I do not know if anyone else posted this but you notice how when outside the castle the trees follow where ever you turn? Well if you set your camera to x and get inside the cannon by the lake and shoot up halfway before falling press x (the camera button) and watch the trees as they turn over. I might get a screen shot later. But the use of this glitch = nothing. I just found this interesting. oh and I also nominate Its a me Mario

I found a place in the aquarium room that acts sort of glitchy, and wonder if I may be on to something. That's all I'll say. Let's get those nominations folks. Choc, can a person nominate if they have already nominated someone before?

The hardest part of the MIPS glitch is picking up the rabbit after you're merged. (swish, swish, swish, swish, boing, click, creeeek, SLAM...click, creeeek, SLAM...swish, swish, swish...)

I think you can nominate as many people as you like, CHOCLAIR has nominated both me and Neo Ninja. So talking of nominations, I think I'm going to nominate Gera2000. He doesn't seem to post here much anymore, but is obviously notable for his revealing of the backwards longjump glitch that allowed you to complete the game with only 50 stars, from which the 31 star and 16 star completions came.

Wow, Dom Dunc, you do it again!! Getting into the aquarium! Very nice find! Today I finally got a chance to experiment with your aquarium glitch, and I succeeded. :)

Of course, once someone tells you that a glitch is possible, then it becomes a lot easier to accomplish, because you clearly know your goal and know that your search is not in vain. I don't think you could just stumble across this glitch... I am wondering why you tried to get into the aquarium in the first place! Clearly the area was sealed and off-limits. It's a great kind of thinking; to push the boundaries of what we think is possible. Anyway, congrats for uncovering this glitch... your work paid off once again.

I have a question: have you figured out a way to get out of the aquarium once you're inside? It seems like you're locked in. All the aquarium walls are real, and the glass is two-sided, unlike some walls. And you can't jump over the glass, even though you can't see the wall at the top.

This discovery doesn't have any real purpose, but it's a pretty neat area! I wonder what the programmers would say if you told them that you could get inside the aquarium... And I guess I'll say it again: "I still find it amazing that after nearly eight years, new discoveries are still being made about this game."
From: Dom Dunc | Posted: 6/9/2004 7:00:17 PM | Message Detail
Nice going Brightguy, I found the glitch by experimenting in other areas until I pretty much know how the game will act in every situation. It's hard to explain without giving the game away so I'll give a much better explanation later.

As you said, there seems to be no way to get out once you're in there, all the walls are solid as a rock.

I like the way there is no water in the aquarium, obviusly the programmers never expected you to be in there but it just seems like corner cutting to me ;)

Also just updating you on another cool area I got into, I got inside the yellow glass on the front of the Tick, Tock Clock, but it's not hard to work out how I got in there now is it? Notable things in here are that the pendulum is not solid, (why would it be?) and if you jump up from this position you enter the course.

I know I'm not the first one to do this, but here's the
'Shoot a dead mario out of a cannon' trick:

1) Go to WetDry Land
2) Get to the cannon
3) Shoot yourself towards the sun (it's a bit to the left)
4) If you did it right, you should hit an invisible wall, fall back, lose 1/4 of health from the fall, but skid backward into the cannon. If it didn't work the first time, keep trying until you find the perfect spot)
5) Repeat until dead. Mario will have no health, but you can still shoot him out of the cannon. The moment he touches land, he collapses, and the moment he touches water (even with just his foot), drowns.

Pointless, but mildly entertaining.

The only other glitch I've found by myself in this game is an alternate way to swim in water 'underneath' the 2nd level (who's name escapes me right now)..

Yeah, that'd be it =). My method that me and my girlfriend (now my ex) found one day, was to go up the slope that's in front of the cannon, and towards the top you can dive into where the walls meet and go through it pretty easily. We'd just never heard of getting under there that way before..

"I think I've figured out how to get into the aquarium. I belive that my knowledge of getting into the Clock's base on the top floor may help me."

So it must be different from the speed jump method, which would seem an awfully difficult way to do it anyway. When the aquarium secret is revealed, then I can ask you, if necessary, how you did the clock.

Getting down to business, I nominate ToiletDuck for finding, among other things, the "popup cave" camera trick in HMC.

I guess my worst fear about the aquarium trick would be if it turns out to be a move that I have already tried, several times, without success. I did try several. You may notice that there are really two aquaria, with two windows each. Would it be too big a hint to reveal whether the trick works for both?

Oh, I itch...I itch for the glitch. It feels like a hundred guppies swimming around me.

I think the Aquarium Trick can only be done on the side with bubbles coming out of it.

I have a theory (and hopefully this doesn't ruin the surprise as it is a complete shot in the dark here); I believe that you need to somehow get up above the aquarium glass by glitching through the roof where it joins the walls. My guess is a well timed jump from where the black hole with the 1-up mushroom is.

That's my guess. I have no other theories on this, except for the fact that where the aquarium walls bend at an angle and the glass separates, running against it makes Mario move funny.
---
Um, no sig as of today. I'll put it on my To-Do List.
From: CHOCLAIR5 | Posted: 6/12/2004 12:44:14 AM | Message Detail
Well I've just found new minor glitch. It's just another "Odd Death",like the one that occurs if you go to the one part of the castle roof where two walls intersect, and you grab onto the edge. Then you are instantly brought back up and killed.

To do this one,go to Bob-Omb Battlefield and take one of the carryable boxes to the mountain.Go past the three rolling balls in the "half-pipe" as I call it,and make your way up until there is a small alcove, and balls are coming from above.Put the box on the right wall, closer to where the balls fall as apposed to where the other wall is.Now attempt to do the "Swim In Whomp's Fortress" glitch, only here.If done correctly, you will die as soon as you land in between the box and the wall.

This is kind of hard to pull off,but I've done it a couple of times,it is possible.Another small glitch is that if you jump up into the right wall with the box in your hand and then hit Z in the air,you will do a butt-stomp and let go of the box.It will then be in the air up against the wall.

Goro123: "...where the aquarium walls bend at an angle and the glass separates, running against it makes Mario move funny."

Similar to the glitch I mentioned. But on the window just to the left of the course painting, the left half of that window sill is glitched. You can walk right onto the left part of the window sill without jumping. And if you run leftward against the left frame, then do a long jump, Mario jumps in place and shakes hysterically. This corner has me interested.

Before Dom has to give us the cut-throat signal, let us go on...

CHOCLAIR5: "...go to Bob-Omb Battlefield and take one of the carryable boxes to the mountain.Go past the three rolling balls in the "half-pipe" as I call it,and make your way up until there is a small alcove, and balls are coming from above.Put the box on the right wall, closer to where the balls fall as apposed to where the other wall is.Now attempt to do the "Swim In Whomp's Fortress" glitch, only here.If done correctly, you will die as soon as you land in between the box and the wall."

I have actually done that just as you described, but I was trying to get inside the mountain. I guess your discovery is an indication that the mountain is a "world boundary", and that there is no way to go through it.

The under-castle area may be like this as well.

"This is kind of hard to pull off,but I've done it a couple of times,it is possible.Another small glitch is that if you jump up into the right wall with the box in your hand and then hit Z in the air,you will do a butt-stomp and let go of the box.It will then be in the air up against the wall."

I remember doing something like this in a few places. Then I slid down the cliff slowly.

*violently gives cut throat signal*

No, I'm joking, feel free to discuss any ideas you have. Bill, it's quite possible that you have attempted the correct method of getting into the Aquarium but failed, it's pretty hard to do even when you know exactly how to do it.

Also on that subject, I think the glitch is possible on both sides, but I've actually only done it on one, I'll try today and see if it's possible on both.

I also add my vote for ToiletDuck to be put in the Hall of Fame.

On a side note, I'm very much enjoying xyz dragon cannon's antics, although I don't think rising to him is the best policy, just mark his topics that break the ToS and ignore them. This is one of the only boards on GameFAQs that hasn't (yet) been overrun by insults and flamewars, so just try and keep it sensible people.

Here's something I discovered on my own today. It's how you can get to the very top of the castle with no stars, wing cap, or anything.

First you have to get on top of the castle. There's 2 methods I know of. If you don't know, you can do a search for them. Anyway, once you're on the castle, go up the slanted part in the front and center (just over the Princess Peach picture), and head right up to where the brown window is. to get up to the next level, you're going to have to triple jump. Since you can't triple jump up ramps, you'll sort of have to do it going sideways. So position Mario at the right edge of the slanted roof, and fairly close to the wall (but not too close). Now execute a triple jump to the left. Make sure not to go too fast. If done right, Mario will grab on to the edge of the higher level. If you mess up, just go from the left to the right. Keep trying until you get it. It is pretty hard. I only managed to do it once.

Once you do manage to do it, you'll be able to run up the wall and find yourself at the very top of the castle.

Sorry if this is common knowledge. Also, sorry I explained it so badly.

I did that triple jump about three times. Boy is it hard. That's too bad because I want to get the "scram" message in the black room of death.

One crucial reason I am excited about the aquarium is that someone has suggested that this is a method that can be used to do the clock glitch. But more importantly, maybe a great many walls we want to get through could be done with the same method, such as: the mirror; the "black room" in back; the fake spiral stairs room; behind Bowser's trap door; and maybe even the fake mural & "wooden room of death" in CCM.

By this time, I suppose I can safely assume that you have not found a way to nudge Toad over to the aquarium windows and use him to wedge yourself in.

Wow 6, members. We go on. Although we haven't heard from him for some time, how about I nominate Alex Penev. I remember him being a powerful glitchmeister. I believe he found a method of getting on the high ledge in JRB without a cannon.

I was just looking at my Mario site, wondering why my page of queries was missing the question "is there a way to penetrate into the aquarium displays?" Interestingly, I found I had at some point moved it to my list of "pipe dreams" of Mario 64, that list of "wouldn't it be fantastic if you could..." type musings. It was put alongside questions like: Do you suppose it’s possible to strategically hop on top of one of those rolling boulders just as it’s about to go into the black hole, and be taken to a hidden level such as the Thwomp’s Basement? Maybe the sign on the fountain sculpture is telling you about something that you can do with the L button. Can you jump off of the floating ship in Rainbow Ride and land on top of the moving oars? Can you get the Rainbow ship to dock at the big house?

I must have dismissed it as something that, similarly, wasn't worth serious consideration! Well, now I can move it back to my query page. I now await the day when I can move it on to my page of secrets.

Yeah, I definately add my vote for Alex Penev, who knows what kind of crazy glitches he's pulled off to complete the game in under 50 minutes with 31 stars?

He posted here a while ago and I asked him how long it took him to complete the game with 16 stars but didn't get a response. Talking of speed runs, I managed to get a 16 star completion of around 37 minutes from turning the game on to collecting the final star from Bowser, but I still think I can shave another few minutes off that. (I came up with some better strat for some of the stars)

OK, more on topic, has anybody tried doing the backwards longjump on that green rock near the cannon in Bob-om Battlefield? (below the floating island) I've got some pretty good speed off it, but never got anywhere useful.

I'd also like to nominate and add my vote for David Wonn. He's discovered some major glitches, such as the infamous "Race Koopa The Quick in 0 seconds" on both Bob-Omb Battlefield and Tiny-Huge Island. He also discovered the modern method method for getting on top of the castle with 0 stars from the right side(Before this,I believe it could only be done by doing a triple jump and doing a complicated wall jump move,I'll have to look it up)

One crucial reason I am excited about the aquarium is that someone has suggested that this is a method that can be used to do the clock glitch.

That was me, and how I did it (I've only done it once like this and I've never been able to replicate it) was that I first got on the banister, then I would jump and dive at the corner of the yellow part. I just went through, and my game froze.

One can only imangine that to do this glitch, one will need to get at the corner of a wall and force oneself through the corner.
