I nominate Dom Dunc of course.
I can't wait to get going on the glitch. However, I am dreading that door merging trick. The margin of error is so tiny. And the sound of the door opening and closing hundreds of times as Mario goes back and forth drives you nuts.
When I do the turn-jump-kick method, Mario just hits the wall over the door. So that doesn't work. He jumps too high. Or the door is too low.
When I do it jump-turn-kick, Mario goes "Whoooh!" But just lands near the door.
I've also tried just turn-hitB method, and several times Mario went through the door, but didn't stay merged.
I also tried another method: turn-hitZ-hitB. And I got Mario to slide under the door to the other side. I've done this several times, but he goes through the door too fast to merge with it.
I'm glad Neo Ninja came up with an easier alternative of going through the edge of the door by hitting Z. I am assuming you must have MIPS for this to work. I tried it without him and Mario just bumps the door.

That is correct. You'll be surprised how easy Mario pops through the Star Door -- seriously. The fact that no body stumbled upon this glitch earlier is unbelievable.
Anyhow, I vote for Dom Dunc. Does this mean he's now in the Hall of Fame?

Really useless and possibly known glitch, but oh well. For the 6th star in Whomp's Fortress, aim a little high. If you manage to just skim the top of the breakable wall, it'll shatter but Mario will keep going. And by "keep going", I mean "fall off the stage to his doom".
Anyway, that was my 15th Star, so off to fight Bowser!

I did the Dom Dunc trick finally!
I simply wasn't able to do the jump-turn trick for merging with the door, so I used the Neo Ninja method instead.
After I got through I took MIPS to the door with the keylock and did the same thing, getting into the Stairway of Death. Then I went into the tiled black room on the other side.
Then I reset the game to bring MIPS back and did the same trick at the door next to the two pillars. Using the same method as above, I entered the Wet Room of Death. From there I went out to the black room behind the moat door. Lakitu-in-the-black-room move over. MARIO is in there now!
I plan to bring in some screenshots from all this soon. Now for some observations:
From the description of Neo Ninja's alternative method - walk into the right edge of the door with MIPS and hit Z - I assumed that meant Mario would just walk through to the other side holding MIPS. But it never happened this way. What did happen, after a few tries, is that Mario put MIPS down and then merged with the door. BUT! He had his back turned away from MIPS, so couldn't pick him up. Of course if you try to turn around you will just open the door. But I found you can safely turn around while crawling. I turned and faced MIPS and stood up. At first Mario just swung out at MIPS a number of times, but finally I picked him up and put him down on the other side.
I had previously assumed that you could go up the fake stairs to where they end. But it turns out the invisible wall is right at the foot of the stairs. Of couse I knew that from watching the Dom Dunc video.
I'd advise anyone who wants to get screenshots to enable Lakitu<>Stop mode before doing the glitch. The camera is awfully uncooperative, especially in the moat-level black room of death.
As Dunc observed, there seems to be no "grace walls" available for getting out of the moat level black room.
And because the moat level black room is shorter than the regular black room, it is more evident that jumping over the wall to try to get out is an exercise in futility. The barriers seem to extend invisibly above the black part, just as they do in the main black room. But I would highly encourage people who get in here to try to jump out of the room to reach the water below.
And this was all done without EVER using a GAMESHARK!
(places garland on Dom Dunc)
(kicks self in butt for not figuring this out)
Let's bake a delicious cake - for Dom.

Nice going on performing the glitches Bill. I have some observations to make of my own.
Despite the fact that there are no walls that can be walked through in the wet room of death, if you use Neo Ninja's method of taking MIPS in there with you (clue: pick him up while merged with the door and jump around, with luck you'll land in the room with MIPS) you can then use him to get back out through the door. So no reset is necessary.
Also, when you have MIPS with you in the wet room, try jumping at the walls while holding him, then punching as soon as you hit the ground, you should see that he's stuck to Mario's right hand for a brief period, it looks really weird, like when Mario holds his hat in the classic glitch.
P.S. Thanks for voting me into the Hall of Fame. Do I get the award at a ceremony, or will you just mail a cheque to my house? ;)

Just finished the game with 16 stars. Dom, that's an incredible discovery. *golf claps*
The first flight of stairs was a bit of a pain, but the endless ones were much easier. Just keep pounding A until it works. ^_^

I took MIPS swimming today. Then I put him in front of the door underwater, but I couldn't pick him up again because the door pushes you away. I had to drain it to get at him.
Someone else who's had MIPS in here mentioned him being a "water type" creature. I don't know what they are basing that on.
"(clue: pick him up while merged with the door and jump around, with luck you'll land in the [wet] room with MIPS)"
I don't always pop out on the right side, even if I push the correct way. But as long as MIPS remains in hand I guess I can keep trying. I've been through the iron moat door without MIPS, and I've put MIPS through without me, but we haven't gone together yet.
Once I put him down on the other side and am still merged, I don't know which way I'll go through if I move. This is okay if they are the wooden doors, because I can go through myself and he is waiting.
Sometimes when I hit Z I go all the way through rather than merge. That's an disadvantage at the wooden doors, but an advantage at the others.
A current problem is picking him up after merging. I have to keep getting down to adjust my angle so I'll pick him up instead of just swinging at him or punching the door jam.
I still haven't succeeded in the origional method of using MIPS as a wedge to push me through. So I don't know yet if that always gets you through all the way or if it sometimes just causes a merge.

Bowser gives you an F until you fight him at least once.

Bill: Using MIPS as a wedge has never caused me to merge with a door, I always get pushed all the way through.
When trying to take MIPS with you into the black room, try facing back the way you came (while holding MIPS)and jumping, usually you come out of the door to the side your back is facing. (though not always so it may take you a while)
I have the same problem when trying to pick up MIPS once merged, apparently if he lands too close to the wall, (I think part of him has to be inside the wall) you can't pick him up. So if you can't grab him immediately, leave the door (back flipping usually works well) and try again.
Trial and error is the best way of finding out which movements will case you to come out of the correct side of the door.

"Using MIPS as a wedge has never caused me to merge with a door, I always get pushed all the way through."
That makes it a pretty failsafe way to get through the warping doors if you don't need MIPS to go with you.
"try facing back the way you came (while holding MIPS)and jumping, usually you come out of the door to the side your back is facing."
Then a back flip should be perfect at this point.
"I have the same problem when trying to pick up MIPS once merged, apparently if he lands too close to the wall, (I think part of him has to be inside the wall) you can't pick him up."
Though a time or two it worked after just adjusting my own position.

The CPU of the n64 is a "MIPS 64-bit RISC" (a custom R4000), which runs at about 94MHz.
So there you go.. possibly homage to their hardware, since SM64 was their first kick-butt super-hyped project.

I heard that as a demonstration to Nintendo of the MIPS CPU the company that makes it showed a demo with a rabbit in it, and Nintendo ended up using the model in SM64.
Alex, have you managed to complete the game with 16 stars yet? If so, how long did it take you?

OK, nobody's posted in a while so I'll do something.
Here's a SM64 glitch music video I made a while ago because I was bored.
http://www.otaku-universe.com/~domdunc/SM64_Renegades.wmv
I called it SM64 Renegades because that's what we are... O.K. that was lame, but it ties in with the music which is Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine.
Points of interest are:
Getting to the tip-top of the castle with 0 stars, this is one of the toughest glitches to do on SM64 due to the precise nature of the triple jump.
Swimming in a very small pool of water behind the waterfall in Tall, Tall, Mountain. I believe I am the first to get to this area.
Entering the Black room of Death before entering the castle for the first time, this gives a good view of Lakitu. It also shows that Bowser gives his speech whether you enter normally or through the Black room. (I believe someone asked if this happened a while back)
Reaching the castle roof with 0 stars from both the left and right (oww my poor thumb)
How to cross the bridge at the beginning without triggering Lakitu's speech, this is a small glitch I discovered, may be useful for speedruns of the game.
Two different versions of Neo Ninja's secret lagoon.
Plus all sorts of classic glitches in between.
Please note that I made this video before I discovered how to beat the game with 16 stars which is why it's not featured.

Stop calling the "on top of castle with no stars" thing a glitch. It's a trick. If that's a glitch, than I guess the "Wall Kicks Will Work" star is a glitch, too.

"Castle Roof With 0 Stars" is a glitch. The "Wall Kicks Will Work" star is NOT.The difference between these two are simple:
The developers MEANT for you to be able to get the "Wall Kicks Will Work" star. They DID NOT intend for you to be able to get on top of the castle with 0 stars.
That is the difference, and proof, that "Castle Roof......" is a glitch.
Also,it seems that no one is nominating anyone for the Hall Of Fame,so I nominate Neo Ninja. For those of you who don't know Neo,he started the original "Secrets....." topic(and for that alone he should be nominated)and also discovered various glitches and methods for glitches that had already been discovered. His best work can be found on Dom Dunc's website, which is in my sig.

Sorry about the double post, but I just watched your music video Dom,and I have to say that it was awesome! It was probably my favourite out of all three SM64 music vids I've seen by you.
Also,I forgot to actually vote.1 vote for Neo Ninja to be in the Hall Of Fame.

I second Neo Ninja, I like his Secret Lagoon, his method of getting into the black room of death through an alternate wall (which incidentally I've never been able to do) and also his easier method of taking MIPS through doors, very useful.

New minor glitch people:
I found this today when doing a speed run of SM64. I got 42 minutes by the way, I know that's not great but I did do it cold. Anyway, the glitch is as follows.
Teleporting Bowser
Play through the game until you reach the final Bowser level, blow him up two times so he stamps and causes the platform to become star shaped. Now grab Bowser's tail and throw him as far away from the platform as possible, make sure you don't hit a bomb. Now if you're lucky Bowser will attempt to jump back onto the platform but will fall short, however, instead of falling away again he will be instantly teleported to the centre of the platform.
I caught this glitch on tape so you may get a video some time soon.

CHOCLAIR5: I may put one up once I've got a better time.
Bullet Bill said: "Someone else who's had MIPS in [the water] mentioned him being a "water type" creature. I don't know what they are basing that on."
Yeah, that was me. What I meant was, it looked to me as though MIPS was designed to taken into water, if you drop him underwater he has a falling animation, then he hits the bottom, landing on his butt, then he slowly gets to his feet and stands normally. But if you jump against a wall when holding MIPS in air, he just falls as though he is standing on air and lands, already stood up, there's no special animation, this means that they made animations especially for when MIPS was underwater. Maybe there was originally some deep water that MIPS could reach but it was taken out.
Anyway, just thought I'd update you guys on some more messing around with MIPS.
Use Neo Ninja's trick to take him into one of the Black Rooms with you, then grab him and jump against an invisible wall (this includes the wall blocking the stairs in the Stairway room, and any wall in the moat room) This will cause MIPS to get stuck to you're right hand. Now usually when you hit the floor he becomes unstuck, but you can keep him on your hand by jumping again immediately. If you keep jumping as soon as you touch the ground you can keep MIPS stuck to your hand for as long as you want. You can kick in midair, and even do triple jumps and he won't become unstuck.
Also, here's a quick way to get out of the wet room without resetting, as long as you took MIPS in with you, just walk up to one of the walls facing back into the room you came from (whilst holding MIPS) and press Z, or jump up whilst holding MIPS against the wall and press Z to pound the ground. You should get pushed through the wall and back into the room with the two pillars.

I was wondering which Tall, Tall Mountain waterfall you got behind. Is it the one near the monkey, or one of the waterfalls near the bottom? I do remember some small hidden water areas down there.

First bump of the new topic.Hopefully someone will discover something interesting and get people visiting the topic again. We need a final vote for Neo Ninja,so someone vote!!!
For now all we can do is discuss some stuff, like the mysteries behind the amazing(pffft)"Suicide Yoshi" glitch (</shameless self-plug>).
So far,it appears to be random. It may have something to with altering Yoshi's path based on where you are standing,it may depend on how you get to the top of the castle(although that has kind of been proved wrong,as Dom Dunc witnessed the glitch by using the cannon, while I used the traditional "Castle roof with 0 stars" trick,in a file that had 120 stars).
Share your ideas,everyone!

the other day just messing around i found a cool trik
go to the invisible mario hat couse where you to activate all of the blocks that drop invisible hats by stomping that thing
jump down the hole and immediately press c-left or c-right just between the screen goes black and u drop into the course and the game should freeze up and u have to reset it...
not too spectacular but hey....
also if u are in the pool with the waterfall in it and you jump onto the ledge thingand do a triple jump with the final jump landing over the hole and you stomp (Z), it makes the noise as if something was there but its supposed to be empty
even less spectacular but hey...

OK, new topic of conversation: What type of glitches would you like to see discovered in the future? Personally I'd love to see a glitch that allows you to beat the game with 0 stars (I know there are many logistical problems with that but we're getting so close!) There's also the infamous 'swim beneath the castle' glitch that's yet to be realised, I'd love to see that happen after all this time. Anyway, what would YOU like to see? It doesn't matter if it will probably never happen, just tell us what you like.
Also, to carry on with the hall of fame, I'm going to nominate Bullet Bill. He discovered the 'secret pond' in Cool, Cool Mountain. But more importantly in my opinion, he's helped many people new to the board with the tough glitches with accurate, clear descriptions. Where many people would become irritable at answering the same questions over and over, he's polite and helpful. He also helped keep this topic alive during the slow periods, probably more that anyone else. So for those reasons I nominate him. (and vote)

There WAS a way to get behind the mirror but with a Gameshark... It would be nice if there was a way to access that place without it.
And here goes a third vote to Bullet Bill. *votes*

I think that a new rule for the hall of fame should be that, the last person to be entered, has to nominate another person. That way the whole thing keeps on rolling. That means we need one from Bullet Bill and then one from Neo Ninja. If neither of you want to nominate, I've got a few people in mind...

That's a good idea Dom,and I think that will be the rule from now on.
Also,I think that there shouldn't be 20 spots, but more like ten. That way it's a more respectful position to have if you are voted into the hall of fame.
So,new rule:
If you are voted into the hall of fame, you must nominate someone else, unless you are the 10th person voted in,as there will be no one else needed in the hall of fame.
Also,I have an idea for the hall-of famers, but I won't reveal it until this topic(if it ever does)reaches 450+ posts(and that's a hint as to what the idea is right away)and also another hint is that I probably shouldn't be voted to do it,or Neo Ninja(Neo Ninja maybe, but me much less likely).Of course,if you guys don't agree with the idea, let me know(AFTER it's been officially revealed by me,if it ever does get revealed).
