Woah! I was trying to get into the dark room that I can't seem to get into. I was struggling for 10 minutes which made me frustrated. For no reason, I got the wing cap and face-planted into the side of the castle hoping that something would happen. When I was supposed to fall and hit the ground, instead I was standing half inside and half outside the left castle wall. I wasn't able to get out. I kept trying for about a minute and then I fell all the way inside the wall. It was like a bottemless pit in tall tall mountain. I died. Then, I tried to do what I just did. I wasn't successful.

Has this ever happened to you?¿?¿

Hmmm...by "left wall" do you mean the left wall of the castle itself, or the wall of the castle tower that you can run up to get to the very top of the tower? I've had several glitches happen involving walls that you can run up.

ok, then what is the point of a glitch other than proving who has the least to do. games are for playing not trying to see where the coders made minuscule errors. and i do have a point. without me who'd field at slip in the cricket matches? case closed

Glitches can sometimes help you. For example, with only 31 stars you can get up to the final boss (normally needs 70 stars). 4 posts to destruction of ianburt's post. Please evacuate area.

Ian, without the glitches that have been found over the years in SM64 do you think there would be any chance that we'd all still be playing it? Probably not.

The search for glitches makes the life of a great game even longer, well after you've completed the game, found every secret and beaten every bad guy, there are still things to be found. You see, the biggest reason for trying to find glitches is because it's fun. Isn't that what these games are about anyway?

What's the point in insulting us just because we have play games in a slightly different way to you? We're all fans of the game so why try and start arguments? We're not trying to pick the game apart as some kind of insult to the programmers, in fact, it's a testament to them that these glitches have stayed hidden for this long.

I hope you decide not to post any more insulting comments on one of the best topics on the GameFAQs forums, and I hope you try and see our point of view. You have to admit, it's pretty cool beating the game with only 31 stars.

I'm talking about the castle itself. I tried to do it again but I can't seem to do it anymore... It's really nothing special.

But I did discover what's REALLY inside the castle. *smirk* The creaters of SM64 were probably too lazy to edit the inside of the castle without going in through a main entrance.

What's inside the castle is a big empty space with a lake on the bottom. That is the lake we've been trying to get to.

When you fell in the bottomless pit, did you fall right through the water, or did you splash into it?

Here's a very minor trick that you may or may not already know about:

Simply go to Tiny Huge Island, in huge island mode and get yourself hit by one of the goombas at the start, now, as you're flashing with invincibility, run inside one of the goombas. As long as you follow it's movements and stay inside it, your invincibility will never go away. Not particularly useful, but it's quite fun to see how long you can stay inside the goomba for.

Also, I have some speculation about a new glitch that may be possible:

With my previously mentioned MIPS glitch, that prevents him from running away from you, I've managed to get him to give me his star extremely close to the entrance to Shifting Sand Land, so close infact that part of the star is behind the wall you have to jump through. This makes me wonder exactly what would happen if you grabbed the star while behind this wall (if you were jumping into it and grabbed the star at the last moment) Hopefully you wouldn't enter the course but simply fall into the water below the basement... Just a thought. I have tried to do this a few times without any luck, so any help would be appreciated.

Also, this 'through the castle wall' glitch sounds very promising, keep at it, we may get under there yet!

Once again, It's really no big deal.

"get yourself hit by one of the goombas at the start, now, as you're flashing with invincibility, run inside one of the goombas. As long as you follow it's movements and stay inside it, your invincibility will never go away."

I found a similar trick in Big Boo's Haunt After getting hit by the piano, go under it and push against the wall. You can stay under it and not take any more damage, even while the piano keeps playing the Stephen King Sonata. I don't know whether Mario was flashing, or was protected by his pressure against the wall, or that it is safe under the piano.

"I've managed to get [MIPS] to give me his star extremely close to the entrance to Shifting Sand Land, so close infact that part of the star is behind the wall you have to jump through. This makes me wonder exactly what would happen if you grabbed the star while behind this wall (if you were jumping into it and grabbed the star at the last moment) Hopefully you wouldn't enter the course but simply fall into the water below the basement..."

How much of the glitch have you done? What happened after you picked up the star? Did you enter the course?

"Rrrggg... I still can't do it. There's no water. It's just like any level when you fall down a cliff and die and Mario screams."

Funny. The water underneath extends entirely under the left castle wall. Do you remember what part of the wall you entered? And do you remember what the nothingness that Mario fell into looked like? Was it just sky?

I did find that if you fly into the side of the upper tower (except the front), Mario goes partly through the wall before falling.

So far, I've only managed to grab the star and fall back inside the basement hallway, I'll try again today and see if I can get any further with it.

REVOLUTIONARY NEW GLITCH ALERT!

Well, here's something to brighten up your days:

Beat the game with 16 stars!

No, you didn't misread it. No, it's not a mistake. You CAN defeat the final Bowser with only 16 stars. That's less than a quarter of the original amount.

OK, here's the deal, I'm going to reveal how to do this glitch on the 15th of May of this year (along with a video of course), to celebrate the first anniversary of the ==Secrets of Mario 64== topic. (you might say I'm doing a Neo Ninja) This will give you time to try and figure it out for yourself.

There are two clues I will give you on how to find this glitch:

1) MIPS is involved. (all my messing about with that damn rabbit finally paid off)

2) It's so simple you'll kick yourself for not thinking of it first. (So simple in fact that it was about 15 minutes between first thinking of the glitch and completing the game)

Also, if you don't believe me, here's a teaser pic for you, it's a pic of me in the Bowser in the Sky level with 18 stars! You heard it here first, this is a world exclusive.

http://www.angelfire.com/pro2/zelda/18starslarge.jpg

Now, I know this pic could easily be doctored, so if you don't trust me, you'll just have to wait for the 15th... (I suggest you make sure you have a new game ready)

Feel free to ask me about theories you have, I'll be glad to tell you if you're hot of cold.

16?! *follows suit and worships DD*

from your hint, i guess it involves using MIPS to get through doors you're not supposed to, including perhaps the second key door? but it has to be more than that; why 16 instead of just 8?

i'm anticipating your video with much excitement.

An odd thing about Hazy Maze Cave...

There's no ceiling above the lake. This allows you to see several things that shouldn't be visible, including:
- the red coin star marker
- two elevator shafts, including one that leads out of this area
- bats in a hallway connected to one of those elevator shafts
- several doors that don't appear to be connected to anything
- a group of distant blue and yellow specks (I think they're bats, because there are four of them in a line)

I can only provide some of my guesses about MIPS. First, 8 stars wouldn't be enough because I think you need 15 to get MIPS. But for some reason you need the extra star for the big glitch. I am guessing that has a parallel with the 30+1 requirement.

And clfish24, I can't figure out how you would have seen black behind the left castle wall. The background is light blue. There is nothing black outside the castle except two small rooms behind doors, which are far away from that wall. If you were to get Lakitu behind the left wall using standard camera tricks, you would see a sky and an ocean. It looks like going through the wall caused a warp to a different area.

More weirdness at the lake in Hazy Maze Cave...
I got Mario on top of the big island in the middle of the lake, stopped the camera there, and made Mario go all the way back to the elevator leading out of this area. Then I had him ride up the elevator and approach the door leading back to the falling rock area, which suddenly popped into view out of nothing as Mario approached the door.
(Also...while Mario was riding up the elevator here, I saw a nearby elevator teleport upward.)

By my watch, it is now 00:05 on the 15th of May 2004 so it looks like it's time for my post.

Well, it seems that by now many of you have figured out how to complete the game with only 16 stars so for some this is merely a formality, the official release of the 'how to beat the game with 16 stars' glitch along with some extras. Warning: Extremely long post, if you just want the video, skip to the end.

Beat the game with 16 stars! Plus, how to access two previously undiscovered Black Rooms of Death!

Glitch 1) Beat the game with 16 stars.

To perform this glitch start a new game and play through it until you have 15 stars (so that MIPS appears in the basement), now head to Bowser in the Dark World and defeat him so you obtain the key to the basement of the castle. Now head down there and grab MIPS. Now take him to the door you came in through, that leads back to the room containing the 30 star door. Now you need to perform the 'take MIPS through doors glitch'. For those unfamiliar with this glitch here's a brief description;

Drop MIPS as close to the door as possible, then walk through the door. As soon as Mario has finished the door opening animation turn and jump back at the door. If you get the distance just right you should land merged with the door, if this happens don't move or you'll open the door, instead, press B to grab MIPS. Now turn and drop MIPS on the other side of the door.

Now grab MIPS again and take him to the 30 star door and drop him a short distance from the door. Now turn around and face away from the door and jump between MIPS and the door, if you get the distance right you should be bumped straight through the door and into the room behind.

Now you need to enter Dire, Dire Docks and complete the first star to uncover the entrance to the Bowser in the Lava Sea course. Beat this bowser to obtain the key to the first floor of the castle.

Now you'll notice that you're trapped in the the room with the entrance to Dire, Dire Docks, to get out simply enter DDD and pause the game and select Exit Course to appear back in the castle lobby. Now walk up the stairs and through the locked door to the first floor of the castle.

Now you need to use the backwards longjump glitch to get through the the 50 star door. To perform this glitch stand at the bottom of the stairs facing away from the door and longjump towards the camera, now hold down Z and tap A when you touch the ground to keep longjumping. While doing this push the analogue stick towards the door, you should start doing backwards longjumps on the stairs. When you land on the stairs, continue to hold Z and the analogue stick and begin rapidly pressing A. With luck you should start moving at a high speed and fly through the 50 star door.

Now make your way to the endless stairs and do the same thing. You should easily make it to the top where you can enter the Bowser in the Sky course. Now simply beat Bowser and you're done! You've completed the game with only 16 stars, less than one quarter of the original amount.

Glitch 2) The Stairway of Death

Follow the steps for the previous glitch until you reach the room containing the 30 star door. But instead of placing MIPS near the 30 star door take him to the door with the key hole. Place him a small distance from the door and jump between MIPS and the door. With luck you'll be bumped through. This room acts exactly the same as the original Black room of Death. When on the side in which you can see Big Boo, the wall around the door can be jumped through to re-enter the game as normal.

Ironically, this door is much tougher to get through because there is a slight overhang above it, and if you make a mistake and walk through the door normally, you have to start all over again.

Glitch 3) The Wet room of Death

Follow the steps for the first two gltiches, but instead of taking MIPS through the door leading to the 30 star door, take him through the door that leads to the two stone pillars that, when butt-bashed lower the moat. Do this, then place MIPS a short distance from the door as before. Now jump between the door and MIPS to be pushed into a room floating above some water, hence the name 'wet room of death'.

This glitch may be useful to those looking for a way under the castle as when in the outside version of the room you are essentially in a box floating above the water under the castle, so if there was a way to pass through the walls in the room, you'd land in this water. As a side note, in this room it appears that you cannot jump through any of the wall back into the normal game so you have to reset the game to continue normally.

Here's a video (11 megs, 5 mins 40secs) of me performing all the glitches. Along with a nice sound track to keep you entertained. As always, all this info will be available on my site when I update it this weekend.

[Edit]

Loved the video.

After watching it though, I realized my methods a bit different then yours...

While holding MIPS, walk towards the right edge of the door frame -- then press Z. If done correctly, Mario should pop through with little problem. This way works on every door accessible from the basement, and even allows you to take MIPS with you, as well.

Some other information about Dom Dunc's 16 Star completion trick:

-It's possible to obtain the final Power Star under an half hour.
-You can complete the game with only entering three action stages (not counting Bowser's levels).

Pretty cool stuff, all thanks to DD.

Now below is a link to my file dumb page -- which has images of all the glitches talked about today.

In one picture you'll notice MIPS is with Mario in Dunc's "black room of death."

Link: http://scr.kthxstfu.com/ (I didn't pick the address.)

Okay, I'm done.

Congratulations on the amazing glitch, Dom Dunc. ;)

To celebrate the 600th post,I'd like to introduce a new idea:The SM64 Glitch Hall Of Fame. Here's the deal:

You may nominate one person, and you must give a reason. You cannot nominate yourself.

Now,once someone has been nominated, other posters can agree or disagree.3 agrees, and they're in.3 disagrees, and they must be nominated by someone else before they get another shot into the hall of fame.

For now, there are 20 slots. You may let other know what you have discovered in order to try to get yourself nominated.Only one person may be voted for or against at a time.

The reason for having a hall-of fame is for newbies, who want to know who to respect, and such.

My nomination is a tossup between Neo Ninja(Started the original Secrets topic, and discovered a few glitches) and Dom Dunc(Discovered a minor glitch or two,as well as how to beat the game with 16 stars),but in the end I decided to nominate:

Dom Dunc

Now we can vote for or against him going in.

Now,some reasons why I should be nominated:
Personally,I really don't think I've done as much as others, but among other minor things,I've started the second Secrets topic, and I discovered the "Kill Yoshi" glitch. That's about it..........for now*hopes someone nominates me*
