bill, it's hard to come by a gameshark these days for a nintendo 64. Who could get a beta or alfa version of the game? Why do I ask? because if you can then that might show us were to look.

I can hardly wait. Assuming it isn't the "walk on the sloped ceiling" trick, it is bound to be interesting, especially if it is something that can be called a glitch.

Sorry if I kept you waiting, I was in a hurry. It's just a minor glitch, after all.
Some weeks ago, I was searching in Mario 64 hoping for glitches in my aunt's house, just because I was bored. So when I entered the lobby, I tried to access the wing cap course from as far as possible, and I found a very curious glitch:

1. Move Mario's feet to the very end of the yellow line that surrounds the sun (the carpet with the sun design). Mario's back preferably should be facing the entrance door. (Hope I made myself clear :P)
2. Press C-up to enter look-around mode and look at the sky's sun. Nothing should happen. Exit look around mode.
3. Now walk inside the sun carpet and just press C-up. You should magically be transported to the wing cap level, without looking at the sun! If not, try again. I tried this from outside the sun carpet, but nothing happened.

That's it. I remember that I discovered another glitch that day I was searching, but i just can't remember it. Poor me... :'(.

Hey Neo Ninja, the second link has the words 's.reuter' at the bottom right corner. What's that?

And the 'walk on sloped cieling in lobby' glitch? That's old, i read it and did it when I first got the game. it had to do with backflipping...can't rememebr anything else...

I'm not sure if people know how this is done or if it has already been discussed so I'm curious. Ok I haven't played for a long time so I don't remember the level name. This is on the level that is a large mountain that you go up that has a slide and monkey near the top.

Anyways.. I once went on the slide and was just messing around and suddenly I was flying (swimming) in the air. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this.

This glitch is easy. However, I don't think this would be a glitch. You move Mario to the end of the sun where the yellow line is on the floor. You Press C up and look at the sun in the Sky/ceiling. Move Mario to the pad with the sun on it, and then you will be transported.

Lobby glitch: I once did something like that. I looked at the ceiling from a distance, and when I entered the sun I was transported. But I don't remember where exactly I looked from. I thought it was from the general direction of the CCM entrance.

Red Slide glitch: So, it looks like you found another mysterious "swim zone", this time in the Tall, Tall Mountain slide. Now that's fantastic. Now I'm gonna have to mess around there for a spell.

I am reminded of someone who says he shot from the cannon in Cool, Cool Mountain outward over the cliff, in the direction the snowman on the pedistal faces. He heard a splash as he died. And I eventually found I could go under mother penguin's pond and swim, but from where he was it would be too far to that spot. And there's no other water in the course. The only viable explanation is that I misunderstood, or he remembered incorrectly, which direction he shot in.

It would be great if you could reproduce the "messing around" action that caused this glitch. The red slide is functionally separate from the Tall, Tall Mountain course from which you enter it, so I don't think you were dealing with any of the water on the mountain. It appears that there may be a "water node" hidden in the slide course somewhere, put there for some other purpose than to be water. We're gonna have to find out just where that is.

The messing around I did in the slide were: using stop-cam to observe that the shed at the top has no roof; finding out that all the arches over the slide, except the first one, have a barrier over them so you can't jump over them; using a long fall as a shortcut; jumping off the slide near the bottom to see if there were any secret areas outside the bottom building where I could land; and jumping off the slide to see if I could hit one of the funny faces that decorate the darkness the whole way down.

Try to remember if you were doing anything that may have caused the game to glitch up, like using a gameshark. Or maybe you found a high speed move that makes the game think Mario entered a water node.

To the red slide, folks!

Here's a glitch for the slide, go down it until you are throught the first tunnel (just before the first banked turn) now stop and back kick back up the slide, you should find that the slide on the other side of the tunnel is gone and you fall into the blackness.

Only glitch I ever uncovered on the red slide caused Mario to fall straight through the surface and exit the stage. Not that impressive.

Like Bullet Bill said, hopefully this person wasn't using a GameShark which could of easily scrambled the cartridge.

"For how long did you know that secret [lagoon],Neo Ninja? Now that I look more carefully, I realized that you even suggested this glitch in your very first post in this topic!"

Yes, I always knew it was possible to get outside the ship from the beginning, but by a different wall with a far less impressive outcome.

Here's an image. See if you can find out where I am.

"I've made it on top of the maze for the trick of reaching the bid house without carpets. But I can't get on the transparent thing because it's too windy to do a well-aimed triple jump."

A little tip. You wont have to get on the roof of maze to reach the pirate ship. The key's in a carefully times long jump.

----

"Lakitu talks to a dead Mario.

To do this, start a new game and get on top of the castle without talking to Lakitu. Now jump around to get your health down to one or two segments. Now jump from the castle roof and onto the bridge below. Lakitu should appear and talk to you even though you should be dead. You'll die as soon as the converstaion is over.
"

The outcomes a bit different in the Japanese version. Basically, Lakitu's text box never pops up, leaving you with the only option of resetting the game. Pretty weird.

Hey guys, while i'm using my gameshark to find ways to go under places like the mountain in Course 1 like Bullet Bill suggested, what other places should I check out?
From: Bullet Bill | Posted: 2/4/2004 10:35:03 PM | Message Detail
You could also check out things like going through the bank of the fish pond and see if you can swim under the castle from there.

Also look at the big water underneath the drained tunnel leading out to the moat. Try to get down there. And see what happens when you leave the water area, do you fall, walk into the darkness, or just bump a black wall?

And for more dry adventures, how about getting inside the giant snowman in SML.

The stairs visible from inside the basement entrance are fake. They end abruptly a short way up. Try to get into this area with the fake stairway.

Can you get into the lake surrounding the underground elevator in BBH?

Gry swimming outside the cliff spires in DDD. Also in this course, go on top of the mesh in the second area.

Swim inside Unagi's cave.

If your gameshark can get to these places, then we know they "exist", and can then look for polygon glitches to get there the conventional way.

According to your picture, Neo Ninja, it looks like you found a different way to get outside the ship, more like what I origionally had in mind, in fact.

What I cannot tell for sure is where in the hull this is. Is this up at the top of the still-sunken ship where the air bubble is? If so, did you really get outside the ship, or is it just a clever camera angle? Or, did you drain the ship and manage to circumvent a side wall near the bottom?

I wish you'd show us how to do this trick too. Maybe you don't think it is very impressive, but you sure have us stumped.

Okay, here is a long post about what I've seen so far with my GS. Also, you should read this, because I think I found something new.

The code I am using makes Mario run a bit faster. But the real reason I'm using it is because of how the way Mario jumps. You see, whenever Mario jumps, he jumps far (sometimes really far). And when you let go of the Control Stick, Mario gets blasted somewhere.

Also, the code reacts strangly to Wing Caps. Whenever I use the Wing Cap, Mario starts to go crazy and then flys UP TO HIS DOOM IN THE SKY and the game freezes.

Another thing is that with the code, you can jump through doors and certain walls. I can enter black rooms this way, and I can even go through the mirror in the Mirror room (you might have heard that a cloud with no Lakitu was discovered over a month ago behind the mirror). And when in water, Mario goes faster, and can't do "holding A button" strokes in water. One last thing. When starting a course, the game starts at weird places. For example, In Bomb omb Battlefield, I land on the gate near the star marker, then suddenly get blasted in the cage near the Chain Chomp. Thanks to my "super" jump though, I can get out.

However, it's not a good thing to start with the code on for the "floating island" stages. Such as Whomp's Fortress. Tall, Tall Mountain, etc. The GS makes you start RIGHT outside the islands (You fall to your death). But thankfully, there's a tiny button on the GS for turning the code off and on.

Still, I think this code can help me, and with it, I did find out at least two things. Read on.

Tall Tall Mountain: When I started this course, just in front of the mountain like the other "floating lsland" stages. However, just a few seconds before I lost a life, I landed on a ivisible floor. You can run around for like three seconds before you die.

Big Boo's Haunt: No, sadly, It's not the lake (the doors Mario can jump through, but not the walls) near the elevator. It's something else. You see, the merry go round's walls are some of the few passable walls Mario can jump through with the code. I was looking around the merry go round to see if there was a passage to the lake, and I jumped and landed somewhere in the merry go round.

I tried to look around to find myself, and when I found Mario with C up, I saw that Mario was under the merry go round! I pressed the GS button to turn the code off, so the code wouldn't accidently jump me out of there. I explored around, and found out the boos can't hurt Mario (They can't reach him). I went under the merry go round again by jumping in front of the door that sends you to a hallway (the one with the door that leads to the elevator).

*whew*. Was that helpful? Comments?

Good finds, anthpel11. If I understand you right, the walls separating you from the "illegal" lake near Big Boo elevator were impassibly solid.

Does the gameshark code for going through walls have a unique response for world borders? If so you can test a wall to see if it was really a world border and therefore impassible in the strictest sense. The problem is I'm not sure if every invisible "rubber" barrier is really a world border. Can it really be one if there is an object beyond it? (such as the castle tower above the courtyard)

Now can the code get you inside the Bob-Omb mountain?

Gliches are cool: Hehe, great code. Just tried it last night. Too bad the game freezes when you get around 5-7 Marios.

Bullet Bull: World Borders? Are those the invisible walls that surround the stages that aren't "floating islands"? If so, I haven't tried to go past the invisible walls yet. But I might check later today. No, I haven't been succesful with the BombOmb Mountain. The only thing that proved intresting was managing to do a high jump in the big gap not far past the rolling cannon balls.

Here's some of the results that I've done using the suggestions Bullet Bill gave me. Be warned, they aren't that great.

Getting Under The Castle: Haven't been able to a find a way yet. The best way that I remember using for trying to get under the castle was the sliding kick.

Getting outside the First area of Dire Dire Docks: I've gotten close sometimes, since a few times I managed to make Mario jump EXTREMLY EXTREMLY HIGH. I'll look around more.

Unagi's Cave: Haven't tried this one yet. Probably because Unagi freaks me out.

Lake in the cabin's walls in Big Boo's Haunt. No success so far. Mario keeps getting his head bashed into the walls.

Fake Stairway in the Basement: Yeah, what Pablo X said, It's just a black room, I've been there a few times.

Getting inside the Giant Snowman: I haven't tried this one much. I'll try to do it more later.

And by the Water area in the drained tunnel....are you talking about the water under the Castle?

I'll post a few more things later today.

Go up to the third floor of the castle. Go to the entrance to the "Wing Cap Heaven" level. (I'm not sure if that's really the name of that level, but the entrance to it is on the opposite side of the room where the "Rainbow Ride" entrance is.) Get as close to the left wall of the entrance as possible. Then use the C-Up camera mode to look as far to the right as possible. You may have to look down a bit to see it, but there's a door out there floating in the middle of nowhere.

Another thing I discovered is: Go in the room with the Tiny-Huge Island paintings. Go up to the middle painting, then get as close to the left corner of this wall as possible. Now turn the camera so that you're looking back at the entrance. You'll see two square doors floating out in the middle of nowhere, above and behind the Tiny Island entrance. (You'll also see the perspective trick that they used there.)

While neo ninja's out on other business, I suppose we should be hearing a drum roll :J But what I concluded from his picture at:
http://www.geocities.com/shane_reuter/SM64_DifferentLagoon.jpg,
and from the shape of the wall and the angle of the nearby water's edge, is that he went through the wall up at the high end of the sunken ship (where you swim up for air).

The walls just beneath the water surface up there behave curiously. If you swim into them you will be pushed under really fast because of their angle. And there are some "vertices" in the wall where Mario get's kind of "stuck" and seems to go most of the way through the wall.

Evidently neo ninja has found a point where you can get all the way through by hitting it at a certain angle, and then swim from there up to the surface outside the ship hull. Only he can provide more specific instructions.

"And by the Water area in the drained tunnel....are you talking about the water under the Castle?"

The tunnel where "It is decreed that one shall pound the pillars" (to gain access to the vanish cap course).

After you drain the tunnel, you can look behind the wall and see the water surface way down below. Maybe a gameshark can let you swim down here. You can also see if you can go beyond the water and walk into the darkness, hit an invisible wall, or die instantly.

This is inside the castle basement, and so is different from the water under the castle outside.

* * * * *

And in reference to your glitch of getting under Boo's merrygoround, I came up with a trick. Go into the brown brick tunnel leading to the merrygoround area. Stop midway in the tunnel and stand with your back to the right wall. Hit C-up to enter look-around mode. Move Lakitu into the wall and under the water as far as he can go. Lock him in place with Stop Cam mode. You should now be looking up at the water's surface. Now walk to the door that opens to the merrygoround area, as close as you can without opening it. The merrygoround should suddenly appear.

But you will also see that under the merrygoround is a large floor made of non-slip steel, all by itself. I suppose this is the surface you landed on when you did your glitch. I'm curious as to why they would bother putting in a floor that is not at all accessible to normal gameplay and can only be seen by peeking through walls.

Now I need to find a way to fall through to that floor without a gameshark.

Bullet Bill: Oh, that, Well, I used the code to get through the pillar, and I saw water there (though it was at the bottem, so I couldn't reach it) . I'll check it out when I have time.

Steel? Was it silver or something? I remember the surface was either a wooden surface or a black surface. I'll look again.

Also, when I was playing with a code making Mario bigger just for fun, I found something weird. I was hanging out in the merry go round, and suddenly, when I was tip toeing near the door, I saw somethign STRANGE! Mario LOOKED DIFFRENT.

His moustace looked puffier, bigger, and was in 2-D (THe one Mario has in the game is 3-D, right?)! He looked more blockier, and his eyes looked weird. I can't remember too much else, but he looked diffrent, trust me.

I then immediatly went to the mansion, and foudn out that it did the same thing when tiptoeing near doors. When you stop, Mario turned to normal.

Perhaps this is the dummy model for what Nintendo used for Mario?

the low-polygon mario you are talking about replaces the normal fully-detailed mario model whenever he is far enough away from the camera. you don't need the detail when you can't make it out from that far away, see. i can only see this on top of the mountain in bob-omb battlefield, slowly move away fom the camera until you can just make out that mario's model has changed.

i have no idea why it should happen near doors in bbh, but it's most likely just that the gameshark was messing stuff up.

and i don't know why he changes back to normal when he's stopped moving. maybe that's a programming mistake.

Weird things I've found using the C-Up camera mode:
- Near the door I saw from the Wing Cap Heaven entrance, there was an empty Lakitu cloud.
- This isn't really a glitch, but if you go to either far corner of the Huge Island entrance and look back at the Tiny Island entrance with the camera inside one of the side walls, it's really far away.
- I haven't actually tried this, but you might be able to see a different door from the Rainbow Ride entrance.
- About the doors I saw from the end of the fake Tiny-Huge Island entrance...the lower one was the door between the third floor and the stairway connecting it to the second floor. The upper one was the entrance to the "endless" stairway.
- I discovered that the castle lobby disappears if you're not in that room. If you go to the Cool Cool Mountain entrance and get the camera on the other side of the right wall, and then look back at the lobby, you'll see some stuff that's supposed to be in the lobby, but the lobby itself will have disappeared. When I did this, I saw a Toad, a door and two coins just floating in the middle of blackness. 0_o

^^ Other pictures done with gameshark.

That's it for now. Hope these are enough to keep the Glitch Hunting!

Wow pablo, you are on a roll here. Seeing those pictures reminds me of those dreams I have of seeing people walk through walls or into a mirror. You should set up a Mario 64 website like Tom Dunc did.

It seems it should be a cinch to just walk through the castle wall and fall down to the water under it. And maybe you can try to get in the "illegal" water area outside the elevator tunnel in BBH. Also try to walk through the mountain in BOB and the big snowman in SML. Try entering Unagi's cave, a trick I like to call "Can Mario Come In to Play?"

I'll try, but it seems hard, specially because I sometimes get this glitch-phobia when playing at super fast speeds.

"Mario LOOKED DIFFRENT....His moustace looked puffier, bigger, and was in 2-D (THe one Mario has in the game is 3-D, right?)! He looked more blockier, and his eyes looked weird. I can't remember too much else, but he looked diffrent, trust me."

I've been kind of mystified - almost spooked - about this ever since you reported it. The idea of seeing the "lo-res" Mario up close is pretty bizarre.

Now, if only we could find a way to achieve a close up view of this version of Mario without needing to have a gameshark.

anthpel11, could you get a screenshot, and show us this Mario?

I'm afraid I can't. I don't have any of those Video Capture Cards or whatever to make screenshots. If I had, I surely would have posted pictures of Getting under the Merry Go round, the invisible floor under Tall Tall Mountain, and the "lo res" Mario.

Also, I haven't been able to try out my Gameshark lately for glitch hunting uses. I might be able to today.

Okay, I've managed to get under the merry go round again with my good ol' gameshark. Amd I forgot that the surface under the merry go round IS steel. So yes Bullet Bill, that's the surface I landed on.

I'm going to go off glitch hunting!

BTW, is there anyway to take screenshots without a Video Capture Card?

Terribly sorry for the triple post, but while trying to get a higher coin score in Big Boo's haunt, I just found out how to see the "low res" Mario WITHOUT A GAMESHARK!

Okay, here's what you do. First, go into the mansion. Try to get Mario as far as from the camera as you can. It's best to do this near doors. Especially the door that leads to the lobby in the room with the evil piano. Then, look as close as you can, squint if you have to. You will probably notice Mario will be lower resolution!

BTW, whoever posts after me does the 400th post! Who shall make that post?

I SHALL TAKE IT!!!
