Hey everyone! Welcome to my first Mario Topic!
This topic will focus mainly on the bigger glitches/secrets found in Super Mario 64.
I'll be sharing some tricks I've known for many years, plus whatever new things I find throughout playing.
Short video's will also be included every once and awhile (though not the best quality).

Please, please, please! Fill free to post whatever glitches you've discovered as well : )
If not glitches, any shortcuts or neat little tricks will be greatly appreciated.

I believe if we all help out, telling each other what we know. We'll be able accomplish things once thought impossible ;)

Anywho, enough with the corny speech....
Now on to the first 2 glitches!

.Enter "Secret Black Room" from alternate wall. Found by Neo Ninja

I was messing with the backwards-long-jump trick on top the castle when I discovered this glitch. It allows you to enter the "secret black room" from a different wall. A wall that can be reached without the help of the Wing cap and canon (of tricky triple-jump :).

How to do it...
---
-First, get on the castle roof.
-Okay, you know the stain glass window of Princess Peach, located on top of the front entrance? Go over to that area and look around.
-If you're in the right spot, you should see a wall with a brown window on it (It's the only window you can reach from this part of the roof).
-Now, what you want to do is long-jump backwards up the steep slop into the window. Press "A" as fast as you can! And try going through it at in angle, rather then perfectly head on.
If done correctly you should go right through the wall and land in the "secret black room."
Note: If you mess up, you'll fly around the tower and end up hitting the boundary line taking 2 meters off your life (ouch!).

Don't expect to do this trick on your first try. Its going to take some practice.
---

Now I've already mentioned the above glitch in another topic. ===> http://s3.cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.asp?board=22511&topic=7696070
The thing is nobody else was able to do it....
So that is why I've taken the liberty of video taping myself performing the frustrating glitch. Proving that it is in fact possible!

The link to the video is included at the bottom of the page...

.Enter Wiggler Worm's domain without lowering the water. Found by Neo Ninja and Brightguy

This was one of the very first glitches I found way back in 97. It's also one of my favorites...
By doing this trick, you're able to swim inside the walls of Tiny-Huge Island, and obviously, enter Wiggler's domain without having to lower the water.

How to do it...
---
-Enter Tiny-Huge Island
-Go to the area which the Chuckya stands on (make sure you're "Small Mario").
-You should notice the big ugly-textured wall near-by (see how it's at a slight angle? This is the key).
-Here comes the tricky part. What you want to do is perform a sideways-summersault into the wall (a sideways-summersault!).
-Now right before Mario actually hits the wall, press "B", making him dive in mid-air!
-If everything goes right, Mario should dive right through the wall and land inside the mountain which is filled with water.
-Change your view so you can see inside.
-Locate a black looking box thing. That's the entrance to Wiggler. Simply swim into it and VIOLA! You're now inside Wiggler's domain without even lowering the water.
You could always NOT enter his area and instead have fun swimming around inside the level. Which is also cool.

Oh yes, this trick will take more then one try to do :)
(But don't worry, fore I've also included a video of me doing this one as well to help you out.)

Once perfected, you'll be able to go through other walls in SM64... Maybe even be able to swim outside the Sunken Ship in Jolly Roger Bay...

Link to video's....

Right click and save as...

There's no sound, and each movie is only 12 seconds long. Better then nothing I guess?

Tell me if the files worked or not (I'm gonna be pissed if they didn't! lol).

Alright, with all that said, I'm going to bed....

eh, oh well.

anyway, while i was messing around in THI (i was able to do the swimming glitch. weird!) and i found something interesting (not really a glitch). be small mario and go up to where chuckya is and grab him from behind. do NOT throw him!! carry him all the way up to the top of the mountain (a pain in the ***). when you get there....go swimming. i won't tell you what it's like, i'll let you see. try to swim really fast. it looks funny! don't forget to throw chuckya while you're in the water!

I'll try condensing the video's to mpg format like blackstar suggested. Maybe that'll help in some way...?

Nice glitch. Though I can't seem to get it to work :\

I need help with the backwords long jump!

.Backwards Long-jump.

How to do it...
--
-Do a standard long-jump (When running, press and hold "Z", then hit "A").
-You must hold down "Z" the whole time!
-Right when Mario lands back on the ground press "A" again. (Remember to keep holding down "Z").
-Mario should do another long-jump without even taking any steps.
-Now simply repeat the process. Mario should be continually doing long-jumps.
-Once you mastered this, all that's left is to hold back the opposite direction of the control stick.
-Mario should slowly start long-jumping backwards! And that's basically it. That's the trick.

It's actually a lot easier then it sounds. Trust me.

When starting a new game, when mario pops out the pipe, hold up.when text appears,do the rythm of a triple jump. You appear in the moat!

I'm afraid you need to be more specific. What does "hold up" mean? There is no up button on the controller. Do you mean push the joystick as if to make Mario run forward?

What is "doing the rhythm of a triple jump"? Just hitting A three times while the text box is open? You have to do that just to get rid of the text box anyway.

So what it boils down to is all you need to do is press and hold forward on the joystick. At what point to you do that, and when can you let go?

I achieved the Wiggler trick twice today. It took a few tries like you said.

I'm afraid I couldn't get the Neo Ninja videos to play. All the programs give an error message. Has anyone else been able to correct this and get windows to play it? Does it have anything to do with the AVIs being too new, and requiring a codec upgrade?

As for the wiggler trick, it seems according to my memory that I dove into the wall near the right edge when I got in. First I heard Mario falling, then the water "caught" him. Then he was swimming under the rim of the lake. You can see parts of Mario sticking through the ground.

Then I dove down until Lakitu came down with me. Then I could look up and see the water from below. When I spotted the pipe into Wigglers area, I swam right into it. The first time I did this the screen started shaking funny, then I went to wiggler. The second time I noticed that it's merely a matter of going through the black square at the bottom of the pipe, which acts as the "warp" into the subcourse.

The one surprise is that Wiggler said his same speech about flooding his house even though I didn't.

Normally when you get underground like this, you will want to find if there's any other places you can access from here. So far I couldn't find any way to drop down to any of the other water tables from here. You can do something like that in Tall Tall Mountain.

So far I haven't found out how to flip-dive into the wall at Whomp's Fortress. I still need the cork box.
From: Bullet Bill | Posted: 5/19/2003 11:58:00 PM | Message Detail
I have found out some new things about the Wiggler glitch.

You can jump back out through the wall to the point you jumped from.

A long jump also works. It seems you need to hit close to the bottom of the wall. So start right from the edge, and don't jump too hard.

Also, draining the water just moves it down underground. It is still there, and you can swim in it. In this case you can see the distinct water edges as you swim around. And you can still reach the wiggler entrance by jumping at it from the water.

If you do happen to fall away from the water, you may be able to hook back under the water, and you will pop back up to the surface.

I made up some GS codes too such as:

Bomb-ombs are Mario, and changing the hexadecimal values of Mario's speed (such as FFFF, you can make Mario go EXTREMELY FAST).

Forgot the GS codes though. :(

Hello everyone. Sorry for not replying recently... been playing too much Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon ^_^;;

Anyway, great find Bullet Bill!
I've tried long jumping through the wall like suggested and it seems you're correct. This way appears to be much easier then performing a sideway summersault :)

With that said. Lately I've been trying to find a way to swim under the castle moat. So far the most intriguing area is the little pond by the wooden bridge (moat has to be lowered). You'll notice the many steep slops (backwards long jump, anyone?) and slightly angled walls.....
With enough patients I'm sure we could find a way through one of them. Long jumping might just very well be the ticket.

Finally, about the video's... I'm not to sure if I'll get a chance to put them in mpg format :(
Have you guys tried using DivX Codec? The video's should play with that (Or so I've been told).

"So far I haven't found out how to flip-dive into the wall at Whomp's Fortress. I still need the cork box."

It's pretty frustrating, that's a given....
All I can tell you is to just keep trying. Constantly do flip-dives... and try aiming near the bottom of the wall. (I wonder if long jumping works too?)

The whole key to the wall tricks is instability in the polygon walls. In laymens' terms, they aren't put together very well. That's what makes the jumping through the wall trick possible. In fact, the best candidates are walls that, if you jump at them, Mario seems to slightly slip through the wall as you jump at it, or if he gets shot or thrown at it.

It may very well be possible to do this in the lowered moat area. I've noticed walls with just this property around the steps, and also in the fish pond at the other end of the area.

Cheers,
NionMC

I've been swimming into the wall at the right end of the fish pond, and sometimes you can make Mario disappear entirely in the wall. But he still isn't officially through it. In fact I don't know if any walls can be gone through under water. I've also been experimenting with long jumps and side flips against the slope on the right end of the beach.

I've also tried some long jumps over the water against the steep walls between the moat and the fish pond.

I examined a corner to the left of the door in the moat using look-around mode, and the walls there seem to be skew when seen from the right angles. This could be a key to getting through a wall. The problem is that the walls are totally vertical, and Mario's hard "oof" when he hits it suggests you can't get in it.

Meanwhile I use C to take peeks at the water underground just to refresh my ambition.

Don't forget the various grass slopes, although they act more solid than the beach does.

I have an Idea for getting underneath the castle (with GS):

As blackstar was explaining, you can change the hexadecimal of objects with gameshark, so if you gave the castle walls the same value as walls you can go through with the invisible cap, wouldn't you be able to go through the castle walls?

i found a glitch of some sort. actually, it's not really a glitch...just something cool.

go to shifting sand land. pick star number 4 and blow the top off the pyramid. now before you eneter, switch the R camera mode to fix. then enter. as soon as you enter, hold down R so the camera locks at the top while you move down towards the red chute with the hands. you should be able to find your way in (just jump toward the center. make sure to hold R the whoel time!). walk all the way through the cute and you should drop to the battle field. if you held down R, you should be able to see the whoel room...and some weird little warped area near the red chute. it's hard to explain but cool to see.

another thing i found(not really a glitch either)...i'm not sure if anyone knows. you can jump kick a bomb-bomb. give him a boot, and he will explose after being launched. kind of funny. tell me what you think of my "glitches".

okay people listen up. the following glitches are all in course 6 (hazy maze cave). if you wish to do them, pay attention. to keep things simple, have the camera on laituku mode, zoomed out for these glitches.

1. go to the gas maze. if you don't know where the gas maze is, press alt-f4 on your keyboard for directions. there are two doors in the gas maze, one with the ditch nearby, an the one without. you want the one without the ditch nearby (or just stay to your left after you enter the maze, you should be able to see the door up there on the left). enter the door, then proceed through the bat-filled corridor and get on the elevator. when the elevator reaches the top, stay in this room. what you are going to do will take you to the other side of this door, with out using the door. go to the corner on the room that's on the opposite side of the elevator and on the same side of the door (if you didn't move the camera at all, it should be the "upper"-right corner). what you need to do is side jump (or somersault or whatever) towards the wall parallel to the wall where the elevator is. then you wall kick off of it into the black space above the wall with the door (try to aim a little to the right of the door). you do not need dive. if you did it right, you should go through the blackness and to the other side of the door, where the monkey bars are. let me make the directions brief in case you read everything, but don't feel like reading the whole thing again.

-go to the "upper right corner of the room"
-do a side flip towards the wall parallel to the wall where the elevator is
-wall jump off the wall described above into the black space to the right of where the door is
-try a few times and you should be able to go thru to the other side

glitches 2 & 3 in next post

p.s. if you want a good laugh put f4 in a post and do preview and spell check message, and look at the suggestions they give you.

**glitches in course 6 cont'd**

from the very beginning of the course, head left and go to the large room with the boulders and everything. head right and you should come to a door. go thru and you should be in a room with an elevator in it. this room has both glitches 2 and 3.

2. i will assign each wall in this room a direction (i.e., north, south etc.) to make things easier. huh? why didn't i do this for glitch number one? uh....look over there! a three-headed monkey! any who, the wall with the door is south, the wall with the elevator attached to it is north, the wall to the left of mario (when you first enter the room and the camera is behind his head) is west, and the final wall is east. what you want to do is go to the southwest corner. side flip towards the west wall and wall kick off it into the black space above the south wall. try a few times, and you should appear on the other side of the door (back into the room with the boulders.) that's glitch number 2.

3. this is a weirder glitch, but uses the same idea. go to the southeast corner. for this one, you are trying to wall jump off the south wall into the black space above the east wall. if done correctly, you will fall down the the area with nessie in it!! however, more often than not you will die for some reason (as if mario went down a bottomless pit).

viola! there are your three glitches. keep in mind for all three you are trying to go as high as possible, so try to wall jump at the highest point of mario's side flip. good luck if you're going to try them, and keep looking for similar glitches in this level! there could be many more! don't forget to post here telling me how you made out.

Of course, I've picked up the rabbit there many times, right in front of the wall you go through to get to the desert course. Is that the one?

If you mean a glitched wall you can go behind, let us know how to do it. I don't think it's possible, because the walls are all vertical.
From: Bullet Bill | Posted: 5/26/2003 6:04:52 AM | Message Detail
Yes, I finally did the 3 hazy maze glitches. But I had to use the triple jump to get high enough, and I also used B to help the horizontal hook.

The first time I fell down toward the lagoon, I lost a life. But I fell in the water the second time.

I also found out that glitch #3 can be done in the room leading down to the tunnel to the red coin room.

When I did glitch #2, I got a "shock" as I went over the wall. You often hear that electrocution sound when you hit barriers in a certain way (when floating down to the "black room of death" for instance).

Incidentally, a good shortcut up to the "amazing escape" star is to go to the end of the walkway near the black hole, right before you would leap to the boulder ramp. Do a careful side flip and a wall kick and you will go up through the scaffold to the ledge above.

I still would love to be able to walk on top of the amazing escape scaffold that Mario hangs from. I tried to side flip onto it from the floating island with the 1-up, but an invisible barrier prevents getting on top (bowowowoing, if you know what I mean).

Another fun thing to do.

Stand infront of a tree and turn so the tree obscures your view of mario. Press up (c) to the 'look around camera thing'. Now by moving the control stick you can make mario and the tree do weird looking things with each other, i.e. mario appears through the tree etc

I believe Blackstar meant that there is a wall you can go through, and that he has been catching the bunny near that wall. Actually you can pick him up just about anywhere in the hall where he runs. I've got him near Toad, near the desert entrance, and places in between.

But now Blackstar seems to have given Toad as a hint for a wall you can go through. That suggests we should mess around at the end where toad is.

But I don't think there is a second special bunny that is hidden in the wall. If that were so, it wouldn't be a glitch, but a secret bonus.
From: AlexPenev | Posted: 5/28/2003 3:14:27 AM | Message Detail
You can take the bunny to Toad (the one near Hazy Maze Cave, and the one in the same room as where you catch him). What you choose to do with him is up to you.

But there's no "second" hidden bunny.

To bring the bunny to Hazy Maze, or rather to the room with the oil pool leading there, you have to do the merged door trick that allows you to take the bunny through the door.

Someone has suggested that you can take him through the sliding doors to the second Bowser hole, but I don't see how you can do the door trick there because that door has a bigger transition than the wooden doors in the basement.

A real achievement would be to take the bunny outside. Has anyone done that?

Hey, I've found a cool glitch a long time ago. I posted it at GameWinners. Anyway, it's really awescome to play with.
First off, you have to have the Wing Cap. Second of all, though not important, it's good to have cannons open. Now, I did this trick in the Bob-Omb level, and that's where I go to perform it, but it'll work so long as you've got the wing cap and a somewhat high place to jump off. Now, to prepare: Simply lower your energy to 1-2 bars at the most. Put the wing cap on, and go to a ledge. The best place for this is in the Bob-Omb level right by the spinning heart. Prepare your triple jump, but when you make your second jump, make sure you fall off the ledge onto the ground below. Right when (or right after, takes timing) you land below the ledge, go for your third jump (the one that sends you flying, literally). If timed right, your jump will take off your energy, but instead of dying you'll go into the sumersault and start flying around. When you do this in Bob-Omb Battlefield, the ledge with the spinning heart is the best because you can soar your way into the nearby cannon. A few things to note: The instant you touch solid ground, you're dead. It is safe to grab onto a tree, as well as go into a cannon. You can not use coins to refill your energy, although they will count toward your wallet. If you try to pick up a star, you will fly straight through it. The spinning heart will spin, but it will not refill your energy.

Keep these in mind, and give it a shot! Maybe you might uncover something about this I didn't...

This is well known, and has been for years.. except it's usually done by crashing into the ground close to a cannon.. you lose your last bits of energy, but slip over the edge, drop into the cannon, and then you can shoot and fly around.

You can't collect stars. I forgot if you can collect coins or not, but they don't refill your health. Etc etc. Touch the ground = death, touch water = drowning.

Works just about anywhere there's a cannon (you don't even need a wing cap).. as long as you can jump from high enough into it.

Never thought of doing it like that. And besides, I'm talking years and years since I first accindentally performed that. Anyway, I love flying around, so I prefer to have the wing cap :)
