Maybe you guys already know this: The "special" triple jump makes mario invincible against lava and the cold water in snowman's land.Good!!
Old news. :P
But when I leapt out to grab the star itself, instead of seeing Mario falling through thin air, the game decides to show him performing backflips of joy - smack bang in the middle of a large body of water. Afterwards, it cut right back to Mario clinging to the hanging pole as if nothing had happened. Rather an odd business. I didn't get anything special with the other star, just the usual bit with Sophie Ellis Bextor on a pogo stick.
Same here. Sorry.
Shall we take a look at the highest possible record to reach?

Wow! So... um... does anyone have a video or something of this? I don't see how exactly this works... I can't get it to work myself, and Hawkeye's video from a few posts back gives me a server-not-found error.

Here, I rapidshare'd it for you: http://rapidshare.de/files/9765044/Whole_Thing.avi.html
It's a video of the whole thing: The bob-omb glitch itself, how to use it to get infinite coins with it and how the coins come back almost instantly.
TTM is the best place to practice, if you take your glitched bob-omb to the first ring of coins, about half of the times you'll get a coin.

Summary of the glitch so far:
Grab a bob-omb and place yourself ahead of or on a slope(facing downwards). Then jump forwards and throw the bob-omb in mid-air, run to the spot it's going to land on and grab it with B as it is exploding.
This can lead to 3 results:
- If you time it right and you are on a slope facing downwards, you'll end up with a large bob-omb on your hands.
- If you time it too early, you will grab a semi-large bob-omb and you'll be pushed backwards(towards a slope if you're lucky)
- If you time it too late, it will explode on your face and you'll have to get a new bob-omb.
Note that if you don't do it on a slope, you'll never pull it off, you'll just keep being pushed backwards until you fall off a cliff or fail to time it.
Once you have the large bob-omb on your hands, walk around and it will transform into different stuff, from coins and enemies to 2D stuff like bits of smoke and orbs of light.

That's right, it has to be a downward slope.
I found a similar glitch a few minutes ago. This one is, as far as I can tell, completely useless, but it might be fun to know. Go to BOB, grab the small cork box in the beginning. Now, the trick is to throw the box and pick it up at the same time as it hits a wall.
The easiest way to do it in this level is to go to the gray platform with the cannon at the start of the level. Stand on the slope edge facing towards the brown wall and press Z. The box will be dropped and will slide slowly on the ground until it hits the wall, making it easy to run past it.
Then, the hard part, you must pick the box EXACTLY when it hits the wall (easiest from the side). It should explode and give some coins, but you will still pick up the box again (sometimes you will hold some 2D stars instead). You can walk around with this box that doesn't really exists, just like the Bob-Omb. If you throw it, it disappears.
The difference in this glitch is that the box won't transform into another item as you go around the level. Any explanation to this?
I've tried this glitch in WF too, with the same result.

There are some objects that don't transform. Another example is a regular bob-omb.
If you get a regular bob-omb while walking around you might as well drop it and do the glitch again.

My explanation would be that when you enter a loading point or a new area in the level, if you're carrying something, the game evaluates it to see what it is. If it's something normal - a Bob-Omb, a throwable box, Chuckya, Bob-Omb King - then the game just lets you keep carrying it. But if it's something that the game recognizes you're not supposed to be holding, and doesn't really know what it is, it just gives you something random, on the off chance that it might fix the problem.
So when you regrab a throwable box, or spawn a Bob-Omb, the game thinks it's normal and won't change it. But when you bring an invisible Chuckya through a loading point, or walk around with an exploded Bob-Omb, the game just doesn't know what to think, and that's why it picks a random item.
It may also have to do with the game not storing what exactly you're holding unless it's something that has holdable properties (like a throwable box). Then, if you entered a loading point, the game would read its memory and simply have no data on what the item was that you were carrying.
---
Now to think of a good sig...

Hm...
I'm playing awith an emulator, and I hate it. The control is a pain. The only good thing is it's quick save function.
I have tried out the glitch a bit. I've reached 168 coins in BOB, but stopped, since I know now that it works. I'll save myself for when I'm doing it on a console.
My tip in BOB is to use the lonely Bob-Omb close to the Chain Chomp. Then bring it down to the first bridge with five coins beneath. Run in and out of the coin reloading zone and it will eventually transform. If it doesn't transform, verse some other Bob-Ombs so that the item you hold at least transform into 2D smoke.
Jumping a lot could be useful as well, especially if you jump into the coin zone, that will avoid the item to transform into the dust that Mario releases when he lands from a jump.
In SSL, getting the Bob-Ombs in a downward slope is hard, it's best closest to the gray building. Then, take it to the two towers closest to the vulture. There are five coins between those two towers, pass them, then go in and out of the coin reloading zone. The towers mark that point pretty well. Try jumpin into the zone, otherwise the item will turn into that sand piece that appears when you walk on the sand.
My big problem is TTC. I just can't get the first part of the glitch right.

I found another way of getting an exploded Bob-Omb. It requires great timing, but it's easy on an emulator. The good thing with it is that you won't get hurt.
Grab a Bob-Omb and go to any ledge. Stand yourself close to the ledge so that the shadow of the bomb disappears, but you can still see the shadow of Mario. Now, even if you hold the bomb until it explodes, you won't get hurt since it's low enough to not hurt you.
Now, try grabbing the bomb again exactly when it explodes. Requires some timing, but it gets easier with a little practice. At least you won't get hurt. This trick may be useful in RR as well.
My problem though is that the Bob-Ombs in this level refuses to transform into coins. I don't think we can get infinite coins in this level.

Because of the .de? No, I tried .com and it sent me elsewhere, so I googled it and got that.
That method would work on the bob-ombs by the maze in RR, and it's going to be a LOT easier getting coins with these.
And yeah, it doesn't seem possible to get a coin in TTC.

I did the backwards long jump up the tallest elevator on HMC. I ended up in the Metal Cap portal room, but the portal wasn't loaded, so it was just a blue space. Just throwing it out there if nobody's seen that before.

Wow! Good to hear that this wasnt just an emulator only glitch. I was afraid my little discovery would have been worthless. Great to see that it can be used for infinite coins. I wondered about that, but was too busy trying to get screenshots of random objects to try it. I plan to add to the second .m64 file I uploaded that just went straight to the point of doing the glitch, and I will continue it on to SSL, trying to get as many different effects as I can as quickly as possible so it wont be boring, and then on to TTM (which by the way I already did some experimentation with, and I will post the few pictures i got in a minute), and then TTC and RR. Hopefully with savestates I will be able to make an interesting movie that shows all of the permutations of this glitch all in one go. I won't be showing duplication of coins though, as videos have already been made of it.
And by the way, to everybody that says you can only get 2d objects and goombas, that isn't true, because I got a cannon on two ocassions, as you can see in the first batch of pictures I posted.
Everybody is so focused on infinite coins, that I think we have overlooked the most unexplainable event in the movies I uploaded, and that is the teleporting Chain Chomp. I got him to go under the teeter-totter bridge and near the bridge at the start of the level for seemingly no reason using this glitch. Maybe some other crazy things will happen with other enemies in other levels? I dont know.
Here are the new pictures (look at my first post about this glitch for the rest):
http://rapidshare.de/files/10078658/TTM_screenshots.zip.html
One other thing I have been working on that I think may be of interest to a few of you that are interested in no coin files, is a rought tas of a 78 star coinless completion of the game. Im up to 60 something stars at just under an hour I believe and plan to finish it up on the way home from wisconsin tomorrow in the car, but here is what I have so far:
http://rapidshare.de/files/10078692/coinless.m64.html
Anyway, good luck messing with the glitch, and please dont hesitate to post new effects, no matter how small, that havent been covered in any of the videos or pictures.

I was messing with the Chuckya glitch on Wet Dry World and I got some weird things to happen. I couldn't get him into the pipe, which actually may have paid off.
1. Jumping on to the ledge Chuckya lands directly next to/merged with the wall. He grabs Mario and throws him in the direction of the wall. This puts Mario outside the borders of the map, instantly killing him. SERV'D!
2. I dropped Chuckya on the bottom area where you raise the water to make him "light". Now, I did this very fast. First, I was running in Chuckya's direction as I hit the thing to raise the water. I long jumped on the wooden booey and then into Chuckya as the water was coming up. Chuckya grabs me and throws me in the direction of the red brick wall. Suddenly, I hear "ha ha!" and Mario is swimming... in the pipe! Maybe the long jumping and stuff had nothing to do with it, and that it was Chuckya throwing me into that red wall while it was dry. Anyway, I swim to the village, drain the water, and perform the Dry Pipe glitch. I jump into where it would normally transport you to the main area with the water raised. But, it doesn't, I just swim there as if I was there. And the water level in the main area is where I had left it. The teleportation of the Dry Pipe had been eliminated for some reason, most likely the method I used to enter the pipe.

Everybody is so focused on infinite coins, that I think we have overlooked the most unexplainable event in the movies I uploaded, and that is the teleporting Chain Chomp.
That happened because you got hit/bumped into a wall(I can't remember which one). Sometimes the item you're holding changes at the last second when you do it. Once I was carrying my worthless orb of light, bumped into a wall by accident and got a coin. The same thing happened another time with a cannonball/other thing that damaged me.
And good luck trying to get something in TTC and RR, I have gotten coins myself in the other 3 levels so I know it's possible to get infinite coins in them. In RR it would seem possible to get coins, but the insane number of breeze bits makes it very difficult. In the case of TTC it's more doubtful, unless someone can figure out a way of trespassing the 3 spinning blocks.

There's a way of only getting coins in RR. As fast as you have gotten an exploded Bob-Omb, jump to the platform to the side of the ship where the breeze doesn't appear (the platform from where you board the ship).
Here, you can go to and from the ship when looking at the yellow coins there. You can see them appear and disappear without even boarding the ship. Just keep doing that until the Bob-Omb becomes a coin. Getting the Bob-Omb to transform into a coin isn't the hard part in this level. The hard part is to actually get an exploded Bob-Omb. It's probably easiest on the ship where the slope is, just beneath the star. You just have to predict how the wind affects your jump.
I have tried and tried, but I just can't get any coins with this glitch in TTC. I don't believe that there is any way to get up higher in the level, I just want to know why the bomb doesn't become a coin even if there is two of them just in the beginning, above the first spinning block.
BTW... Has anyone tried getting an unexploded Bob-Omb with my method instead? You know, dropping it from a ledge? In that case, there is no reason for us to enter the level at 3 o'clock. Stop the time instead and try getting the bomb up the platforms where the red coins are. I can't try it myself at the moment.

No luck, you can only get the plattform above those 3 blocks, and there are still no coins within reach.
I tried transforming it into, say, a fire and then going down to morph it into coins, but everything was eternal.

I was doing the backwards long jumping in Hazy Maze Cave again. Doing it on the small elevator leading to the door to the rolling rock pit room, I got a glimpse into the "physics" of this thing. I was heading left towards the red coin. I flew into that room before I even hit the ground. Holding the directional, Mario was going so fast he was running straight through solid objects. My theory is there's a defined speed at which you will pass through objects or merely hug a wall on them.
Doing it in the same place, I managed to jump to the Metal Cap door again... except the way the camera went, I could clearly see a large pool of water on the other side of the wall there. My theory is there must be a physical area there, we just need to find a way into it, probably from the big elevator.
The next weird thing happened on the big elevator leading up from Dorie's lagoon place. As Metal Mario (dunno if this actually affects it), I ended up pushing myself into the room with the star behind the cage. Looks like you can get there without hitting the switch. Possibly a new capless star, if that's what you're into. Going outside of the door, Mario walks far enough to be in the exact middle of the cage wall, but he's instantly pushed back in. I can't find a way out of there.
The last weird thing took place on that same big elevator. As Metal Mario (again, I dunno if this actually affects anything) I backwards long jumped into the Metal Cap Portal room. But, I managed to wedge myself into one of the pillars in the wall. Past it is just blackness, a map border, but you can get in there, and you can get out (one way). Nothing special, but a point of interest.
Last, I had an idea - we can use Toad in the basement to push ourselves into that column... so why not use the rabbit to push us into one? I've been trying, but with no success. Maybe someone can do it.
That's all, I hope this was useful to someone out there. :P

Well, that thing about getting behind the caged door is entirely useless in a capless adventure, because its quite easy to get behind there with a simple turnaround jump buttstomp on the button...but its entirely useful in the 120 star tas that is currently in development, as that should cut some good time over simply swimming over.
Oh, and by the way, there are definetly two extra coins in Whomp's Fortress. Here is a movie of me getting 143 coins in Whomp's Fortress. Don't mind the first star I got in Whomp's Fortress, I originally intended for this to be a rough 16 star TAS, but changed my mind when I decided to glitch hunt in WF. And yes, I did use savestates, so no I don't hold the WR or whatever for coins in this course if anybody actually keeps track of that. Without further audieu (??sp??):
http://rapidshare.de/files/10136013/143coinsWF.m64.html
Whoever that was that posted that you can grab a box as it explodes gets full credit for this trick, because I wouldn't have even thought to try it if he hadn't said that, and by the way, did you use the box down by where you start? because if so, I can see why you didnt think it transformed, because you have to go up the slope with the Thwomps and the around to the water before it will change. Even with savestates, I had a lot of fumbling around to get it to happen quickly, so good look to whoever tries to be the first to get all 143 coins, because believe me, its tough and random...that or I just suck at glitches and rely on savestates too much...either way..enjoy... Crap, I hope that there isnt already an infinite coin glitch in this level, or everything I just said was pointless...
Anyway... I think this post is running out, so I will just post the pictures of the results screen for the coins and continue in a new post for some other interesting little tidbits i found.

Ok, so I did some messing around with the bob-omb and savestates in SSL, and here is the mess of screens I took for you too look through:
http://rapidshare.de/files/10136229/143_coins_in_WF.zip.html
The only two interesting things were that I was able to hold a blue coin, which was collectable, but unfortunately I did not see a way to regenerate it, because it was a drop from a cactus, and therefore, it wouldn't work.
The other semi-interesting thing was that I was able to hold a piece of a cactus, and when I threw it, it hurt me and froze in mid-air, like normal, and the bottom piece of a nearby cactus disappeared, and it was floating. I was able to kick all the piece away but its head so it was just a floating ghost like thing, fairly funny. Interestingly enough, when I kicked the head off after it was just a floating head, the bottom piece re-appeared and then broke away like normal. Anyway, I loaded a savestate, threw the chunk of cactus again, and this time i started heading away to see what would happen. As soon as I get out of viewing distance of the cactus, it teleported to just within viewing distance and it now had all of its pieces. I think that because I could see a piece of the cactus, it teleported so that it wouldnt run into the situation where a piece of it was visible but the rest of it wasn't.
Anyway, moving onto BOB. I went back to do some messing around, did some funny things on the elevator, by building up a lot of speed and then sliding all over the level, boucing around by the coin posts, and flying through the gate that has a button to open it, but stopped shortly after. Used a ton of savestates for that, but sadly i wasnt recording, because it would have looked hilarious in full speed. The other thing I did was i seriously glitched up a bob-omb so that it wouldnt explode but it wasn't a ghost-bob-omb and it would just push me around the level on my stomach at random. I tried recording a movie from snapshot, but unfortunately it would desync, so I did the next best thing and made a savestate right after sliding down the green slope with a red coin on it. You can actually have the bob-omb slowly force you up the white slope and climb most of the mountain if you have the pacience.
Ok, here is the savestate if you want to play around with this very messed up bob-omb. With savestates, I was able to ride it all around the level for minutes on end, so have fun. Oh yeah, before I forget, the way I got this bob-omb was by trying to make a ghost bob-omb up on the side of the mountain in the way that was described where you jump and catch it and all that, and I ended up flying off the mountain and landing on the white slope, and somehow that freaked it out.
http://rapidshare.de/files/10136691/bobomb_glitch__2_.st.html
Before I forget, here are screenshots of some random things I forgot in previous batches of screens, including glitching into the cannon from the side by bljing up the elevator, random transformations of the box glitch in WF, and the effects of a turtle shell on a ghost bobomb (not very interesting, similar to a moving 1-up). I figured I'd post them just so all the information about sm64 glitches is out there for everyone, because you never know when they might find some use for it.

Here is a savestate inside the cannon so you can look around for yourself:
http://rapidshare.de/files/10138161/inside_cannon_.st5.html
And here is a random glitch I found a few weeks ago that maybe has already been found, I don't know, but I would think it would be tough to press B that fast without slowdown. It's simply done by shooting before the cannon view even appears and can be done with any cannon. Mess around with the camera in the savestate. Here it is:

So anyway, sorry but this little bit wouldnt fit in the other post, I broke them up horribly.
That brings the total coins up to 2970 I think, but certainly the other courses that have those boxes that dont already have infinite coin glitches (are there any?) could get one or two more coins added to their max coin counts.
I'm toying with the idea of making a tas that gets every coin possible, yes including all of the infinite coin glitches to get 255 in them, and only getting the minimum number or stars required, probably 16, but maybe more if I need to unlock some stars to get the max coin count, I'll test that out if I decide to do it. The idea would be to make it all look like the red coins in bowsers stage in Spezzafer's tas, although that was very well done, and I'm sure mine will not look quite as fancy, mostly because I'm not a great TAS maker and also dont have an analog stick for the computer, so it will be done with only 8 directions, like all my videos. It would probably be very long, but I will try to cut as much time as possible wherever I can to make it interesting, hopefully using bljing up elevators to warp around levels quickly when necessary and other cool tas-only tricks.
If anybody saw that coinless tas i put up already and read that I was going to finish it, well I started to, but accidently cleared the movie by loading a state at the wrong time, so I couldnt re-download the movie i posted (lucky I did) to keep working on it until I got home, so its not any farther, but I should be able to finish it pronto.
Anyway thats all, and happy glitch hunting.

Cool BLJing in BOB. But why do the coin graphics stay in the air even after you've collected them? That's confusing. And... would it be possible to get a red or blue coin to appear?

It would take a bit of extra time, but it might be nice to have a "200%" run - get all stars AND all coins. Heh. You don't have to, of course, as it would look great just to see you get all of the coins.

I think I came up with that trick with the box. Looks like you found a way of actually transforming it in WF. But I don't understand how you did it (I can't see those movies on your links...). And how did you get two coins when you can only use the box once?
There's no other boxes in levels where we don't already have infinite coin glitches. The box in BBH is a springing box. Could you do anything with it?
That thing where you flew across BoB with an exploded Bob-Omb... Wouldn't that make it possible to get an insane time at the Koopa the Quick race?

I realize that, but I wasn't intending for this to be one I would submit to any websites, just to see how fast it can be done, and I'd post it here just in case anybody wants to see it. And by the way, there are two of those throwable boxes in WF, thats how I got two coins.
If somebody can make an .avi of that .m64 file, please do. I've tried, and can't.
The way I did it was I went over to the farthest box first and threw it up the nearby slope, chasing it up and grabbing it at the last second. When I went into the water, it became random things, like the splashes and stuff. After reloading the savestate about 10 times it turned into a coin at random, and then i saved state again and figured out which coin it was that was disappearing so i could watch it disappear, and it did when I collected the coin. When i went far away and came back the coin had regenerated. Then I grabbed the box near the start and pressed Z on that little slope and chased it to the fence and just repeated. I think it is the water that triggers the ghost-boxes to start transforming. I guess the game just cant resist making you hold the swirls on the surface of the water. From there you can make it turn into several things, like the bubbles of dying pihranna plants, different types of splashes, the normal smoke, and if your lucky, a coin. In order to get to the water from the starting position, I went the long way, up the slope with the chunks of wall that shoot out and up the huge steps with the Thwomps then slid down the slope into the water.
Go be the first to get 143 coins!

good job!
I'm currently working on getting Mario Wings to the Sky coinlessly with savestates. It looks like you can only get the numbers from above the coins, which is a shame, because the wing cap could then be used to fly in a circle very close and only get the number from the side. The only possibility i can think of now, for the first coin, is to triple jump and just stick your head in above the coin, and tuck back out hard, but I doubt this will work.
It doesnt look promising, but you never know. I've gotten the number while only getting 1 coin, and that one coin wasnt the middle coin. This gave me the idea that maybe using the bob-omb glitch you could make the top coin of a ring disappear and fly through the hole getting only the number. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a way to get the bob-omb onto the island, which I assume you would need to do in order to make the coins disappear. The other problem is, in order to make the coin your looking at disappear, you have to get the coin, screwing over the coinless stuff. The only thing I can think of is that there is some way you can lose what you are carrying without getting it, such as going into the cannon or something similar, but it doesnt look promising. Even if I could get this to happen for the first coin, how would I manipulate the ghost bob-omb to take a coin from the top of the second ring? I think my efforts are going to go unrewarded on this one.

If you're crazy enough, you could try double long jumping from the top of the mountain. You take two damage, and it's pretty difficult, but it might just work.

Well you can't longjump with a ghost bob-omb, and I tried jumping from the top with a wing cap 30 or 40 times and couldnt even get close. I don't think it would help anyway, just speculation. I think that star is physically impossible to get coinless

It's funny that after several weeks of essentially no activity on the "secrets" topic, so many things are currently happening. I feel that this really justifies the sticky that it got!
Re: getting all coins with as few stars as possible: you have to be a little careful here, because you don't have access to all the coins in BoB until you've got the first two stars, and you don't have access to all the coins in LLL until you've got the first four. I've heard from a reliable source that you can get all the coins in DDD without getting the sub star but speaking from experience this is a real pain :-) Also, if I remember correctly, to make the coin collection "count" in a course, i.e. to make the game remember the record on the internal high score table, you have to get a star! So there's 19 stars that you'll have to get, for a start.
Jeez, all this stuff happening. I just put my N64 console in a box, buried it under a heap of other stuff in the cupboard under the stairs, and moved house (for work-related reasons) from London UK to Cambridge Mass. So no SM64 for me until I get back to London---in 5 months!

I think that star is physically impossible to get coinless
Me too. I don't think you can do it cannonless, either.
By the way, with this new Bob-Omb replication trick, has anyone spawned a star?

Now to think of a good sig...

Hmmm... I thought you could get all coins in BoB already after the first star, when the cannons gets unlocked. I also thought you could collect all 133 coins in LLL and enter the volcano with any star...

@Master of Majora: think Koopa Shells :-)
@me: actually, I miscalculated---you need 21 stars at least, if you want the game to register all coin high scores, because you can't get one of the first two BoB stars after getting the koopa shell's blue coin, and you can't get one of the first four LLL stars after getting all the LLL coins because you're in the volcano.

Koopa Troopa appears in BOB after getting the first two stars, that's why you can't get all the coins before that. And in LLL the Yellow Box with the Koopa Shell appears after getting the first four stars, but I think you can get all the coins without using the shell...

Why is this board getting overrun with noobs?

For every $500,000 a school donates to the BCS, they get one ball, which is then put into an air-mix machine. Bowls are selected via lottery. -Phantomwise

I tried something in Project 64 that may or may not have been found already, but I find it interesting to note that there is a spot on top of the castle that is treated as a spot where Mario can stand in place, although it...well, isn't. Eventually he'll even go to sleep! You may get a better idea of what I'm talking about from these pictures:

It's really simple to do, you must have 120 stars. Just shoot yourself on top of the castle, on the slope near the front. When you get control of Mario, hug that wall, and Mario should be able to stay in that spot.

i know i have to go when i get home and u can only have 5 mins to go to the bathroom. THATS NOT FAIR FOR CHILI NIGHT-cheater87

This is more of a secret, but it's possible to get Chain Chomp to stand up if you throw a Bomb-Omb in his mouth. Use the Bomb-Omb directly near his post. I have a rather grainy picture of it, but it was really funny to watch. I should try to get a video of it.

That Chain Chomp thing is old, at least for me. It's a good tactic before releasing him or getting the five coins from it's pole.
BTW, I noticed that the Chain Chomp attacks a lot more and faster in NTSC.
