NEW 15-COURSE COIN RECORD: 2096 COINS!!!
November 2, 2004
What can I say? A strange, but amazing new glitch was recently discovered by "Schloosh!" of the Cyberscore forums. You can read his post here. The glitch allows you to clone Money Bags, the frog-like creature that pretends to be a coin until you come close enough to it. When you approach it, Money Bags starts jumping around, seemingly randomly. For currently unknown reasons, there seems to be a duplication glitch that allows Money Bags to clone itself, so suddenly there are two frogs jumping around! It is not yet known how to re-create this glitch other than just following Money Bags around and waiting for him to clone himself. I got lucky and the glitch worked for me. After waiting for a while, I couldn't get it to happen again (one got stuck continually jumping by a wall) so I finished the level with a new high score of 132 coins! This brings the new 15-course total to 2096!!! This is huge news for me, because for over two years now I thought I had the maximum score. To see that "HI SCORE" message again on my 'perfect file' was cool!

Now, theoretically, if we can keep cloning Money Bags more than once, this would allow a high score of 999 coins in this level - at the very least, assuming we can clone the other Money Bags in the level, this is an additional 5 coins. The only problem is that if the Money Bags can be cloned an unlimited number of times, to actually max out the coin total of Snowman's Land is going to be a big, big pain. Especially if the glitch is random and it takes a lot of waiting for it to happen. Or if the Money Bags gets stuck somewhere and you have to start over. Unless a better way is found, I'm not going to wait for 999 coins, it would be crazy to spend that time... But first we'll have to see if this is even possible.

Also, I was lucky enough to catch the cloning on video! You can watch Money Bags clone himself in this video. (I was so shocked that I paused the game for a second!) Now, hopefully some other people can reproduce this glitch, and maybe we can determine what causes it to happen. If you notice, in the video the cloning happens about where Money Bags started out. Perhaps that has something to do with it... I guess as this happens to more people we'll be able to tell. I'll keep this page updated with any updates on the glitch.

UPDATE
November 3, 2004
Well, after talking with Alex Penev about this glitch, he was able to get it to work not only on both Money Bags in the level, but also on their clones. Unfortunately, this means that 999 coins is possible in this level, and so far doesn't look like there will be any way to collect this, other than chasing a Money Bags for hours. Alex said it took him anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes to clone him, and that he couldn't find any pattern to the cloning. I suggested that perhaps it had something to do with the distance you are away from the Money Bags, but he said that didn't seem to be the case. So, we have to make a decision if this glitch should be allowed to set new high scores... So far we both think that for N64HS it'll be a good idea to not allow it. (Is there really any point to play for hours just to get 999 coins, when there's always the possibility that Money Bags will get stuck somewhere?) He also set a new high score, beating mine by 7 coins (and this can obviously go higher as you make more clones).

ANOTHER UPDATE, NEW VIDEOS
November 7, 2004
I've kept trying to get this glitch to work and I've succeeded another 3 times now. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to spot any pattern yet. Each time the cloning occurred around the spot where money bags was last "sleeping", but as you can see in the new videos, not in the exact spot. When I had three money bags jumping around, one eventually got stuck on the rock wall behind them, and wouldn't turn back into a coin. The next time the glitch occured, one of the money bags walked into the cannon! I could use the cannon and he still remained stuck down there. The screenshot below shows him at the top of his jump. You can comment on this topic [now cached] at the GameFAQs SM64 forum.

ANOTHER 5 TIMES, ANOTHER HI SCORE
November 9, 2004
The glitch has now occurred for me another 5 times, and 4 of those were in the same run. This would mean an extra 20 coins, but I was dumb and went into the igloo while two of the them were outside... and when I came back out they were gone. I'm still not sure exactly why it happens, but I have some ideas...

Another new high score...
