After a short delay, the Secrets of Super Mario 64 returns for Part 6, on the 10th anniversary of its release in Japan!

For a list of the main glitches/tricks that have been discovered, see the beginning of the 5th topic, which remains stickied on this board. For even more details, check out Dom Dunc's website: www.systemcrash.tk (www.angelfire.com/pro/glitches/index.htm) -- Bullet Bill's website: www.billygard.com/mario -- or my website where all of the previous "Secrets" topics have been archived: www.sm64.com/archive

In celebration, here are a few minor new videos from me (note that all my AVI videos require the free DivX codec, see divx.com).

Cannon firing glitch: This has happened to me a few times, I think when I press A to fire the cannon a bit too soon. I believe Bullet Bill has mentioned it too.
Video: http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/Cannon%20firing%20glitch.avi

Castle Foyer Invisible Wall: These invisible walls pop up at the most annoying times. Here's one you might not have seen before.
Video: http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/Castle%20Foyer%20Invisible%20Wall.avi

Bob-omb speed up: Here's a slightly different way to glitch behind chain chomp's gate. For some reason the bob-omb will start moving a lot faster when it's walking against the wall. This is my current fastest time for this star, but it can still be improved.
Video: http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/Curtis%20Bright%20-%20Behind%20Chain%20Chomp's%20Gate%20-%2015.avi

Weird bob-omb: Very short video, but pretty weird. A bob-omb gets stuck in the gate before exploding and goes crazy.

Finally, someone qualified makes the thread...

Hollow Bomb Holders
In Bowser in the Fire Sea, the pylon-shaped things holding the bombs up are hollow... Jump in the lava sea, and you'll be able to go right through them.

Long Jump Koopa Message
Once in a very short while, if you're really lucky, your timing is perfect, and your luck is high, you can long jump across Koopa (in Bobomb Battlefield), and his message will display once you land. This has happened to me thrice in two years.

King Whomp's Message
Here's a really easy one. In Whomp's Fortress, if you wall kick off of the king Whomp before his message is displayed (before the battle starts), his message will be displayed when and where you land. You could have his message displayed anywhere in the course, if you can reach the area with a single wall kick.

Still Coins
In Bobomb Battlefield, perform the "Koopa in Zero Seconds" glitch, but don't go into any cannons. Instead, swerve around and fly toward to box with the coins in it at the beginning of the level. Fly directly above it, and do a butt-stomp on top of it. The box will "explode", but as soon as Mario touches the ground, Koopa's message will be displayed, and the coins that are in the box will be visible, levitating perfectly still.

BEAT REMATCH WITH KOOPA IN ZERO SECONDS!!!
Okay, I was playing around in Bobomb Battlefield, and I tried the Koopa glitch, like I do a lot. But this time, I forgot to get the Flying Cap... And it worked anyway. I tried it again and again, and it worked. Wherever you land after the third jump, Koopa's speech will be triggered. Now, this gave me an idea... Tiny Huge Island also has Koopa, eagerly awaiting a rematch. Now, we all know THI has no caps, but now, I thought that the Koopa glitch can be performed there. I tried it. Success! And then, suddenly, it struck me. I remembered Myles Bukrim's record breaking video of him beating Koopa in 9.9 seconds, because he managed to land directly on the Koopa Shell he had waiting down below on the "beach". You're starting to picture it, I bet. Do the Koopa glitch, land the third jump on the shell, ride the shell to the finishing pole, and jump off it. Just like in BoB, Koopa's message will be displayed when Mario is at the finish line.

Rematch With Koopa the Quick - 00:00:00

Now, so far, it's all theoretical. I haven't tried it yet, but I will. Hopefully, it'll work. Y'all can try it yourself.

A glitch I found:

Disappearing Ukiki

In TTM, get up to Ukiki. Jump over to the little platform opposite him, and turn to face him. When he's at the edge of the platform opposite you, jump and dive at him. You'll try to grab him but get hit and fall in the water before he gives his speech and takes your hat. He'll now be gone from the level until you exit that area, then re-enter, at which point he'll be there again.

And I could swear that for about a second you can see another Mario walking below just beyond the edge of the platform. Anyone else notice that?

It probably was in Haze Maze Cave, since that's where those spiders are.

Those spiders are also located in Big Boo's Haunt.

Speaking of Boos, I have Boo glitches to report.

Catch Big Boo in the Hallway.

Obtain at least 12 stars to make the 5th course available and spawn a ghost in the hallway. Ghosts in this game are defeatable, except this hallway boo. Approach the boo. Do not get close yet, or he will run off. Now, run at him and do long jumps so as to get a speed boost. Even when he reacts and turns to leave, you notice that you go through him. So oddly, you can't defeat this guy.

Weird Boo Noise locations

#1. Run up the lobby stairs into the double keyhole door. Enter the door, stop, turn around, go back through the doors and into the Cool Cool Mountain room. Go to the painting on the right and lean against the wall. Listen, and you'll hear a weird boo noise. What actually happened is that you triggered the Hallway boo, and if you go there now, you see he left the building.

#2. Go to the Snowman's Land room, run to the far right corner, and listen. You hear the boo cackle from here, because once again, you entered the invisible boo radius.

Yo Boo, I see you!

Go enter the keyhole door atop the stairs. Go up to where the spiral stairs meet the floor and wall, and press C^ to look through the wall. You now see the boo in the hallway leading to the courtyard.

Catch Boo unprepared.

Enter Big Boo's Haunt, and select Star #1, Ghost Hunt. Defeat the 5 necessary small boos to make Big Boo appear in the foyer. But do not hurt Big Boo. Instead, run outside the house and look up at the balcony. Big Boo is seen floating up there; late for his appearance.

Not a boo glitch, but a cool Bob-omb glitch here:

Big undead Bob-omb

Go to any course with Bob-ombs. Pick up a Bob-omb, and throw it. Quickly run after it and pick it up right before it blows up. An explosion is heard, a coin appears, and Mario is unhurt. Most noticeably, the Bob-omb Mario holds is now bigger than usual!

That 1 Up is in a compartment on the side of the tower that you can access from the outside by punching the wall it's near. The wall panel will break apart and you can then grab it.

I just found two miniature glitches in about 5 minutes of play. >_> They've probably been discovered, but I can try, right?

Snowman's Land

In Snowman's Land, near the Ice Bully, there are two platforms facing each other with ice (not the kind that hurts you) in between. Go on the platform that you are closest to when you start the level. Long jump toward the other one, but aim Mario a little to the left of the flat part, and a little bit lower, or else you'll just slide over. Continue to hold the Control Stick. Mario tries to run, but he ends up running sideways yet going nowhere. It's hard to explain, I hope you understand it.

Wet-Dry World

Enter the level with the water at it's mid-point. Climb up the spirla ramp thing. Go to the metal crate that's underneath Chuckya. Push it to the right, so it's underneath the platform that you can use to get up to Chuckya. Here's a diagram:

-----__------

You want to push it underneath the middle platform. Then get on the crate, and start crawling around. Mario disappears! I have no idea about this one. :P

I have a theory on how to get 255 coins in TTM much easier.

If we could somehow glitch Ukiki into letting us carry him around the rest of the level, he could turn into a coin at loading points maybe. I have an idea about how do get this to work (same as the way I found to do it in the DS version). It's to have him take your hat, jump across to the little island opposite him, have him stand at the edge of his area, and jump and dive at him. In the DS version, this causes your hat to disappear, meaning you can carry him around normally. It might work in the N64 version but it's just a guess. I'll be trying this out soon and I'll post the results.

Yeah I tried it too...But I found something interesting.

Take Ukiki to the starting area of TTM.

Chase him to the edge of his area (the side near the water), and stand behind him. Now, wait for the Fly Guy to hit you, and just as he hits you, pick up Ukiki. He'll get knocked into the water and will be standing underwater. So jump in and pick him up underwater. From here you can take him down the waterfall and into the starting area. Unfortunately, as soon as you touch land, he gives his usual speech. But at least we're one step closer to taking him anywhere...

Heh heh... I think you're forgetting something that would make your journey a whole lot easier...

Jump in the painting, select "Mystery of the Monkey Cage", go up the mountain, and catch THAT ukiki. Just grab him, and as soon as the game asks you whether you want to free him or keep him, just select "Keep Him"... Now, you don't have to worry about any speeches, and you can take him wherever you want.

Hmm...I tried that just now and it doesn't look like that monkey is going to change. I think if we could do it with Ukiki though, since he's wearing Mario's hat, he might change.

ssbm1221: Really weird glitch. Can you reproduce it? I doesn't work for me.

Swordless Link: You just have to lose your hat to something other than Ukiki and then you can take him anywhere you want in the level. Also, when you do the light Chuckya glitch in TTM you can make Ukiki warp to different places.

One_must_fall: I don't think they will sticky this one because it doesn't have all the info that the previous one did. Also, you mean it was Walton Dell's site which was updated.

What the...? I thought that if you did that, when you went into TTM, Ukiki automatically had your hat...And I thought it was the same for the other levels too. Say you lost your hat to Klepto in SSL, I thought that if you entered SL, it would be lying on the snow, and if you entered TTM, Ukiki would have it...

Never mind, I was getting confused with the DS version. (What I said happens in that one)

Still, I think that if we could find a way to carry him around while he's wearing Mario's hat, there would be a chance of getting him to turn into a coin, since the hat is another item and all.

"Weird Boo Noise locations #2. Go to the Snowman's Land room, run to the far right corner, and listen."

I believe you meant the Whomp's Fortress room on the left corner. Correct?

"Go enter the keyhole door atop the stairs. Go up to where the spiral stairs meet the floor and wall, and press C^ to look through the wall. You now see the boo in the hallway leading to the courtyard."

How could you have done that? The keyed door is a load point, and going into it unloads the entire first floor, including the hallway.

"But do not hurt Big Boo. Instead, run outside the house and look up at the balcony. Big Boo is seen floating up there; late for his appearance."

I may be mistaken, but if you defeat the Boo inside, won't the one on the balcony be there anyway?

SuperMarioLover | Posted 7/8/2006 5:24:18 AM | message detail
It's probably been talked about before, but wouldn't it be possible to get a bob-omb in BoB to turn into the red coin on the chain chomp's post, then getting rid of the coin without collecting it(don't know if it's possible), and stomping on the post?

That would give us a new way to get that star coinless, for the people who can't get to the gate before the bomb goes off, like me. I can get the bob-omb that can transform, but I can't get a bob-omb to the gate in time to push through.

I split that into two paragraphs so that it was easier to read. I wonder if what I said was a new discovery...(probably not)

Swordless Link | Posted 7/8/2006 8:06:59 AM | message detail
That wouldn't work. See, when the bob-omb transforms into another object, the original object doesn't disappear. The red coin would still be there, but he'd have another in his hands. Also, when you throw the coin he's holding, it adds one to your counter right away.

Another thing, I haven't been able to get it to transform into a red coin yet. I doubt it's possible.

Is there some obvious way to get the third coin in Mario Wings to the sky capless/cannonless that I'm not seeing? Well, if not, just letting you know, its physically possible to get, and theoretically possible to get the fourth. The fifth is out of the question through this method.

I don't see anybody doing this on a console, ever, but it involves bljing on the elevator and getting huge speed and shooting over to the area with the rolling balls, and then flying up the mountain (as seen in FODA's 120 star tas) and then launching off the top of the mountain, hitting the coin. I did it when i was making a 'for fun' ccless tas. If absolutely optimized, I could see somebody getting the fourth in a tas, but you would have to be as close to teleporting speed as you can get without actually teleporting when you started going up the mountain, and maintain the absolute max you can maintain going up. The fifth is abosultely out of the question through this method, so no ccless for a tas yet. If anybody knows some glitch to get the 5th coin that I don't know about, let me know, and I'll try to make a tas that gets the star ccless, if i can pull off the fourth coin.

Now, you don't have to worry about any speeches, and you can take him wherever you want.

ssbm1221: Really weird glitch.
