I think I figured out why I got warped to wet-dry world.

thejapanesebuzzsaw said that he got through the 50 star door with 40 stars. The endless stairs are over the wet-dry world painting. I think I jumped through the wall the same way thejapanesebuzzsaw jumped through the door and since the staircase is over the wet-dry world painting, I must have fell into the wet-dry world painting when I jumped through the wall.

So how do you go through the 50-star door without 50 stars?

Okay, I'll share how I beat the game with only 31 stars, and some more info on the glitch. Here goes:

First, you beat the 1st Bowser and then collect 30 stars. Next, you go to Dire, Dire Docks and complete the star for Bowser's sub. Then beat the 2nd Bowser. Now you have 31 stars and are able to make it to the second floor.

Once you get there, you use the same backwards long-jumping method on the set of stairs before the 50-star door. You don't have an unlimited amount of stairs now though, so you have to get Mario going the really quick long-jumps fast, on your first or second try. If they don't start, run to the bottom of the stairs and try again. If you're lucky, Mario will start to long-jump up the stairs super quick, and with even more luck, the speed at which you are now moving will be enough to send you through the wall or door at the top of the stairs. Now you can scale the never-ending staircase and beat the final Bowser, beating the game with less than half the stars you are supposed to have! :)

You know how when you jump on a steep slope and you slide down to the ground and then kind of start walking backwards? (And if you run into a wall with this backwards motion, you start to slide across it.) Well when you do this long-jump on the stairs glitch, and start long-jumping very fast, you get the same type of backwards motion when you reach the top of the stairs (provided you don't long jump again or punch or something to stop it.) Except, this "backwards" motion is incredibly strong. You have some control over it, but basically it's just Mario running backwards and sliding across walls super fast. It's strong enough to let you go up and down the "endless" stairs like 5 times (while sliding on the wall - but if you open the door it stops), or you can do several laps around the Tick Tock Clock room (backwards of course), or even sometimes it can propel you through walls.

Using this glitch I have ended up in many strange places: gone straight through the stairs into Wet-Dry World, fell through the floor to the one below, ended up in the Tick Tock Clock room, and sometimes even inside those big blocks to the left/right of the clock. Of course, doing this glitch to get you through the 50-star door can take some time. But if you can get the 31 stars quickly, then do the glitch quickly, the game is definitely beatable in under an hour, with some luck.

What's more, if you could use this same trick on the stairs in the first room of the castle (to make it through the second locked door), you could beat the game with ZERO stars! That would be cool... except I haven't ever gotten the fast long-jumps on that set of stairs. Not only is it very small, I don't know if the stairs are steep enough... But if it is possible, wouldn't that just be great??

Thanks for sharing with us Brightguy. I believe that it is possible to beat the game now with only 31 stars. But I also believe that it is possible to beat the game with 0 stars . Yup thats right, ZERO. But the thing is, the trick to this would be exceedingly difficult because the steps towrds the first key door (main floor) are very short and not that steep. We should all give it a shot if anyone tries to overcome this feat.

I just beat the game with 31 stars a couple of hours ago myself.

It took me 0:49:20 hrs. New record? =)
I got the same 31 stars that I did on my 50 star file, since I had 31 stars by the time I got the second key anyway. I dislike the Jolly Roger bay star (treasure cave) and the aquarium, they take a long time, but I can't think of any other stars to swap them with.

I entered the third floor at 38:10, and fell in the Bowser #3 hole in 39:30, so it took me only 80 seconds to glitch both of the staircases. Not too bad =)
I got the Jumbo Star at 43:55 (with credits at the end, the cake showed up at 49:20).

With this new way of long-jumping that I hadn't known before ("hold and tap".. I always used to Z+A each time separately) I managed to improve my Footrace With Koopa the Quick time from 16'3 to 16'2, a WR tie with Myles Bukrim's record that he beat me with several years ago. That race requires 6-7 consecutive longjumps to the cannon under the island (<aside>wear the wing-cap</aside>), so the timing is critical.

Some credit goes to gera2000, I guess :)
Thanks Brightguy and thejapanesebuzzsaw for realising the glitch works on the 50 star door. After twice getting glued onto the walls next to the 50-star door, I finally aimed straight at it, and was propelled into the grandfather clock.

I tried the trick on the lobby's stairs, and also the stairs leading to the basement, but couldn't get it to work =/

Wow, only 80 seconds to go up both of the staircases? You must be able to repeatedly tap the A button really fast! It can take me a little while to get it going fast on the lower staircase, plus it doesn't work every time. It's great you did it so fast.

And you improved your Koopa 1 race... that's great too. But I almost find it hard to believe you didn't know you could do consecutive long with the Z button held down. ;) Maybe I'll try my luck with the Koopa races too; any rules I should know about? I assume you can't use any glitches like when you triple jump close to the Koopa, you could get an extra head start.

blackstar: yeah, like I said in my final paragraph of my previous post, it might be possible to use the trick on the first set of stairs and complete the game with zero stars, but I haven't ever gotten the really fast long-jumps on it. I do agree that we all should try, though. That would be great!

For the Koopa race, you're not allowed to use something resembling the 0'00'00 glitch. So you can't jump close to Koopa, and land somewhere further ahead to trigger the speech bubble.

You are, however, allowed to land "first-time" and talk to him from his most extreme boundaries (there's a circle that goes around him).

You don't have to actually collect the star, just get to the flag as fast as you can. He'll tell you that you cheated because you used the cannons anyway. Make sure you have triggered the Wing Cap, you'll need it for the cannon.

There are some alternative challenges for the Koopa Race.
One is to beat him without using cannons or the wing cap. Doesn't matter how, but the 0'00'00 glitch start isn't allowed of course. I have 19'9 on this race, due to a fancy double-wall kick at the tip of the white slope near the Chain Chomp.
Another is to beat him using at least one warp. Doesn't matter where you warp. I used the warp in the mountain, with the same double-wall kick for the strategy above. It's actually slowed, because you have to backtrack down the mountain a bit to get into the warp.

###
If you don't know the 0'00'00 glitch, it goes like this:
Get a wing cap, and do a triple jump near Koopa. The third jump has to be close to Koopa, but make sure he doesn't stop you to talk. You should be flying now. Do NOT touch any ground, otherwise Koopa will talk (regardless of what ground you touch). Enter a cannon (butt stomp straight into it), and blast to another cannon. Blast to the flag. Slide down the flag, and touch the ground. Koopa will talk. Agree to race, and the timer will stop beacuse you're at the finish.

Same works for Koopa 2, using the Koopa Shell. It's a LOT harder. Triple jump close to Koopa, and land exactly on the shell on the beach (kill the little Koopa first). Use the shell to go to the finish flag. Press Z to cancel the shell near the flag, and agree to race. The clock won't start since you're already at the finish.

(the first was found by David Wonn. The second independently by Wonn/Bukrim, and Steven Zwartjes had some role to play in it too. I forgot the exact details =)

Probably.. if you can glitch the 3 staircases quickly.
You'll lose a minute at the start, and around 4 minutes fighting Bowser. Giving you 5 minutes to do the staircases.

It does not work in the lobby. The staircase that leads to the upstairs area, isn't part of the same room (that's why it blacks out when you enter). So if you did get it to work you'd be in a black area...

I'd agree that it won't work in the lobby.
You're more likely to enter a black area like the "black room", or even fall underneath to reach the basement corridor towards Big Boo's.

About the lobby...

If you stand right next to the 50-star or 70-star door and press C-up to look through the wall, you can see the room on the other side. And if you stand right next to the second locked door in the lobby and look through the wall, you in fact can see the next room. (This only works one way though. If you go through the door and look through the wall to where the lobby will be, you will only find another "black room". So in this case the lobby is not there, and would only load when you go through the door.) Hmmmm...

Note that if you do not stand right next to the doors and look through them, but instead you back up and then try to look, you will see only black. The next room is only loaded when you stand right close to the door. (For example, you only hear the tick-tock from the clock if you stand right next to the 50 or 70 star door, otherwise it stops.)

Perhaps the room I can see from the lobby isn't really the real room that you go into, but a look-a-like just so you don't see black when Mario opens the door. But all the other rooms like this do not load only when you go close to the door... and this "room" would also be a lot more detailed than the others... open the right door from the lobby and you can see the stairs in the room.
It's a mystery.

Woah. This glitch is awesome. At first I kept messing up, then after five minutes realized I forgot to hold Z. Then for another ten minutes I kept speeding up, then slowing to a normal hop backwards. Finally, it worked. Just... wow.

I also saw the video of the stairs trick with 51 stars. I also had the problem of it not finishing, but I fixed that by downloading it first. The video was taken by just pointing a camera at the TV. And there was no sound.

I was working on backward long jumps up the stairs. But I can't tell when the jumps are about to become really fast, and when they do, I can't keep up with them.

I am also supposing that Mario only gets really fast if the backward jumps are done on a stairway. Can anyone get this effect across a floor? Maybe this could be used to walk through the mirror into the backward room.

Someone in this topic elected to mention the effect of walking backwards after you come out of a hill slide, and sliding along a wall if you hit one while this happens. I didn't know what that was referring to. But today I came off of Princess's Secret Slide backwards, and I seemed to be going really fast, did walk backwards, and did hit the wall and slide along it, just like the description. But what does this have to do with the stair trick?
From: Brightguy | Posted: 4/30/2003 12:20:37 PM | Message Detail
Remember to just keep rapidly pressing A.

It wouldn't be possible for it to work on the floor. You need a series of steps, and you can get Mario to long-jump on each step, really fast, which really speeds him up. You long-jump on the first jump, then right away before the first jump has barely started, you long-jump on the second, land on the third, etc. (There is a really small staircase in the mirror room, and I tried to do it there, but it's too small and too far away from the mirror to probably be any good.)

The backwards-walking effect is what happens after you successfully do the trick on the stairs. It's really powerful, and that's what allows you to go through the door with 31 stars. I've done it on the last set of stairs and started sliding on the walls uncontrollably. You can slide up and down the last staircase like five times before it finally runs out.

I've discovered that you can preform the backwards long-jump trick on many of the steep slops on top the castle roof.
Doing so will cause Mario to fly across the whole stage at an amazing speed, not stopping until you run into the boundary line.
